This week is going to be HOT! I am calling it an "ice week" in August. In the winter in Texas we often get ice on the roads and clients can't make it to the barn. This week if you can't come before 10am then riding will not be allowed. Feel free to come give your horse a bath and graze them in the shade and spend time with them. But the stress of the 103°+ riding is going to add unnecessary stress to an already heat stressed animal. Meanwhile I plan to set my alarm and get up at 3am, three horses to ride before taking kids to school! Should be fun.... soup season is coming! We are almost through the worst of it!

I am so excited we are starting a yoga class here at the barn tomorrow night!!! It's going to be geared towards flexibility, strength of core and breathing control. If anyone is interested in joining us we are doing it every Thursday at 8pm. This weekend Foretold Delight and I tackled a fear of mine. 7 years ago I lost a horse in warm up at Texas Rose. She passed away from an aneurysm, it was fast, it was shocking, and it left me with a hole. Tulip and I were supposed to get our bronze together, but unfortunately that did not happen. But Delilah has stepped into those shoes filling the holes. This weekend we decided to keep it simple and go back for my last score for first level towards my USDF rider achievement award. I am so pleased with this little mare and the heart she puts into being such a faithful dance partner. She does not make it easy but she does make it fun. Now it's time to work hard and get our last two scores for Bronze!

I am always trying to grow in my knowledge of horse management to better the care of each horse here. If you are familiar with my facilty you will quickly learn that I do not have a lot of land that I am working with. Less than 6 acres total. On this land I have managed as many as 16 horses at a time. Currently my max is 12, any more then that and I am overwhelmed. This year I decided to test out a "track system" with my mare pasture. I have battled buttercups for years in these pastures. But this year I am happy to say that doing this form of management has allowed grass to grow and keep the buttercups mostly away. I have posted two pictures here. One of the gelding pasture (which will soon have a track installed as well) and one of the mare pasture with the track. Both were mowed about 10 days again, before the last big rain. With this track system it has also opened up a possibility to allow my harder to keep horses an opportunity to eat fresh grass. And my easier to keep horses more on a managed diet. If you are managing horses on small acreage I HIGHLY recommend looking into using a track system!
