Senior Scholar Aydan Lawler had the incredible experience of displaying her artwork in the office of North Carolina representative Matthew Winslow for the next six months. She, along with fellow students, were also able to meet with Representatives Gloristine Brown and Timothy Reeder to have in-depth discussions about NC and politics and both representatives showed interest in having some of Aydan’s artwork displayed in their offices.

Our Scholars can use enrichment scholarships to take Alternative Break Experiences to give back and expand their worldview, a priority we're supporting this . Gabby Gervasio traveled over spring break with students:

"During my alternative spring break in Northern Ireland I learned about the country's history of conflict during “The Troubles”, while also witnessing how it has had lasting impacts on their youth. I was hosted by youth workers who guided us through Northern Ireland's history and their possible future. I learned from political prisoners, Catholic leaders, Protestant leaders, women’s leaders, and even the first q***r Lord Mayor of Belfast, Northern Ireland. I visited multiple youth centers, both Catholic and Protestant, that host adolescents in order to merge the groups and keep them off the street from engaging in risky behaviors and political fights. The youth of Northern Ireland and their advocates left a lasting impact on how I view community as well as how I view sociology and public health. Given that Northern Ireland's political history has impacted their sociocultural beliefs, youth workers have to be innovative in how they improve the health and well-being of adolescents. It has inspired me to explore how methods of improving public health change globally."

Our timed challenge for high-impact trips is quickly approaching! If we receive 30 gifts during that time, we'll unlock $10,000 for future trips!

Sophomore Zasha Griffin reflected on the DC trip: "Overall, the trip to DC was a great way for me, and my peers, to represent and realize how dedicated Pirate alumni are. After meeting countless alumni, we heard success stories and how ECU guided their success, even in the cases where they have pursued a career that they did not go to school for. Through my time in DC, I was very inspired to, as Tremayne Smith said, lift as I climb. ECU’s strong focus on student growth was incredibly emphasized throughout the entirety of the trip."
