You are lying in bed. You have said your prayers. You are supposed to be sleeping. Instead, your mind is re-living something that happened in your day or the past. Maybe you are fixated on something you need to do tomorrow or in the future.
You are working, but you are not even on the job! (In other words, you are not getting paid for this.) Nevertheless, you find yourself in a frequent pattern of losing sleep at night or waking up too early because your mind can’t seem to let go and relax.
This is the problem of lacking presence. Surprised? When you spend your days focused on the past and future, your mind will want to do the same thing at night. However, you need restful sleep at night, in the present. You want your mind to settle down and quickly reach your sleep goal!
I know from experience how tiring and frustrating this is. It can seem like it will never end. I learned how to refocus my distracted mind and finally fall asleep. Here’s how to do it!
Develop the practice of paying attention to your breathing while you lie in bed. Whenever your mind begins to wander, intentionally focus on your breathing. Focus your attention on each inhalation and each exhalation. Pay attention to the air moving in and moving out of your nostrils. With consistency, you will find this practice easier. Get started tonight.

It may not look like it, but I took this picture while I was out sick with COVID during the pandemic. At the time, I was working as a hospital chaplain. On this day, while keeping my distance from others, I found retreat by spending time with God and being renewed in the greatest sanctuary on earth: nature.

I had already learned the value of carving out time and space for retreat as part of my regular routine.

We don’t have to wait until we’re sick before we start taking care of ourselves. I encourage you to explore enjoyable ways to experience retreat by incorporating small rituals into your daily life. Go for a stroll in the park. Take a relaxing bath or enjoy a good foot soak. Light a candle and sip your favorite beverage. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb and get some rest.

Remember, a string of small rituals can help you create your own custom-made, inexpensive retreat.

This is Adrian—may you be as good to yourself as you are to others.
