Every child enters the classroom with strengths, potential, and something meaningful to contribute. Too many times throughout my career, I have heard, “He can’t do that,” “She isn’t ready,” or “That may be too difficult for them.” Some have gone as far as saying, “That child doesn....

📚 FREE KINDERGARTEN LITERACY RESOURCE FOR FAMILIES!

The new school year is already underway, and as I have spent time in local online parent and homeschool groups, I have noticed that some families are still trying to determine where to begin, especially when it comes to teaching early reading skills.

Whether you are just getting started, establishing your homeschool routine, or looking for additional practice to reinforce skills your child is already learning, I created this resource for you.

BrightGate at Home: Kindergarten Literacy Series—Unit 1 is now available as a free resource. This five-lesson series provides clear, step-by-step guidance for teaching foundational literacy skills at home.

Children will:

• Learn and review M/m, A/a, S/s, and T/t
• Practice the sounds /m/, /ă/, /s/, and /t/
• Blend and segment sounds
• Read words such as am, Sam, at, mat, and sat
• Build vocabulary and listening comprehension
• Participate in read-alouds, movement, sensory writing, and hands-on activities
• Reflect on and celebrate their learning

Each lesson includes parent directions, materials needed, simple teaching language, and developmentally appropriate activities grounded in the Science of Reading.

You do not need a classroom or expensive materials—just a few common household items and time to learn together.

This series can be used as a starting point for the school year, as a week of focused instruction, or as extra practice when your child needs reinforcement.

I’m truly honored to be featured by the National Microschooling Center as its 1,000th member!

BrightGate Academy has grown from an idea rooted in my years as an educator into a school designed to ensure that children are known, supported, challenged, and given the opportunity to thrive.

Thank you to the National Microschooling Center for welcoming BrightGate into this growing community and for sharing our story. We are excited about what is ahead!

We are so thrilled to announce that the Center welcomed our thousandth member in June!

Dr. Sharon King-Dobson is the founder of BrightGate Academy, a specialized microschool preparing to open in Fleming Island, Florida. BrightGate Academy will serve students through second grade in a small, supportive, and academically focused learning environment. The school is designed for children with learning differences, students who are academically at risk, and young learners who simply benefit from smaller class sizes, personalized support, and a calmer educational setting.

After more than 20 years in education, as a special education teacher, curriculum and special education administrator, and Assistant Superintendent of Student Services and Curriculum, Dr. King-Dobson saw firsthand how easily children can struggle or become overlooked in large classrooms. She is launching BrightGate Academy to create a place where children are truly known, where learning gaps can be addressed early, and where students can build both academic skills and confidence.

Dr. King-Dobson holds a doctorate in education and brings extensive experience in special education, curriculum development, instructional leadership, and school administration to this next chapter of her career.

BrightGate Academy’s guiding message is: Every Child’s Path to a Brighter Future

I left district leadership.

Not because I stopped believing in education—
but because I believed there was another way to serve children.

I chose a different path.

After more than 25 years in public education—as a special education teacher, school and district administrator, and, most recently, an Assistant Superintendent—I made the decision to step away from district leadership and create something I had been thinking about for years.

People often ask me why.

Throughout my career, I have worked to improve educational programs, support teachers, strengthen instruction, and advocate for children who need something different from the traditional classroom experience. That includes students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, IEPs, and 504 plans, as well as children who may not have a diagnosis but still struggle to thrive in a large classroom.

I have also seen how difficult it can be for even the most dedicated educators to provide every child with the attention and support they need when classrooms are large, resources are limited, and school systems are managing many competing demands.

Those experiences stayed with me.

They led me to create BrightGate Academy—a small, academically focused learning community designed for children who benefit from a calmer environment, personalized attention, and instruction that responds to how they learn best.

BrightGate Academy is preparing to serve up to 15 students in PreK4 through Grade 2 in the Fleming Island area during the 2026–2027 school year.

BrightGate is not a rejection of public education. It is an extension of everything I have learned from the students, families, educators, and communities I have had the privilege to serve.

For families searching for something smaller, more personal, and intentionally designed around young learners, I would love to connect with you.

The BrightGate Founding Family Interest List is now open at www.brightgateacademy.com.

At BrightGate Academy, we believe that every child deserves to feel known, supported, and confident in the classroom.

We are working diligently at creating more than a small school. We are intent on building a caring community where families, teachers, and students work together to help each child grow.

We believe that when children feel safe, understood, and encouraged, they can begin to believe in themselves and discover just how much they are capable of.

Small. Supportive. Academically focused.

At BrightGate Academy, we believe educational choices should begin with a clear understanding of the destination.

I’ve been thinking a lot about homeschooling lately…

First, I truly appreciate that Florida gives parents educational choices. Homeschooling can offer incredible opportunities for personalized learning, flexibility, and fostering a genuine love of learning.

But as parents make this decision, I believe there is one question that is even more important than:
“Which curriculum should I buy?”
That question is: What is my end goal for my child?
Is the goal for your child to transition back into a traditional school at some point (public, private, or otherwise)?
Is the goal for your child to earn a standard high school diploma? Is the goal to attend college or enter a career or technical program?

Once you understand the destination, you can make more intentional decisions about the path you take to get there.
Regardless of how we may personally feel about academic standards, the fact is that they influence the knowledge and skills children are expected to develop, the courses they will eventually take, and many of the requirements connected to future graduation pathways.

That does not mean homeschooling has to look like traditional school. It does not mean parents must give up creativity, flexibility, or child-centered learning.
It simply means parents should understand the expectations their children may eventually encounter and make sure they are preparing them accordingly.

Curriculum is not the end goal. It is one of the vehicles we use to help our children reach it.

The most expensive or popular curriculum is not necessarily the best one. What matters is whether children are mastering important concepts and skills while learning in ways that are engaging, creative, and meaningful.

When foundational concepts are skipped or not fully mastered, learning gaps can develop. Those gaps can make future learning more difficult, especially in reading and math, where each new skill builds upon earlier ones.

Homeschooling does not have to mean choosing between educational freedom and academic preparation. Families can absolutely provide both.
For homeschooling parents: What is your long-term educational goal for your child, and how does that goal guide the choices you are making today?
