The last prescription.

There was a time when the job of medicine was to treat the illness, relieve the pain, comfort the suffering and stand beside the patient when life became unbearably difficult. Now, in Canada, death itself can be presented as a medical option.

That should disturb every one of us.

A prescription is supposed to help a patient. A treatment is supposed to care for the person. Euthanasia does neither. It ends the patient instead of addressing the reasons they are suffering.

And once death becomes an accepted “solution,” we have to ask some very uncomfortable questions. What happens when proper palliative care is unavailable? When disability supports are inadequate? When someone is isolated, depressed, exhausted or feels like a burden? How free is a “choice” when the alternatives are missing?

We should never build a healthcare system where it can be easier to access death than the care, support and hope needed to keep living.

When did death become a treatment?

It didn’t.

It became the last prescription we should never have started writing.

Human life is either valuable, or it isn’t. There is no in between.

France’s Constitutional Court Approves Euthanasia Law, Even for Incompetent People

Euthanasia Prevention Coalition reports that France’s Constitutional Court has upheld a new euthanasia law that allows doctors to euthanize adults who lack decision-making capacity, even when a legal guardian objects.

This troubling development puts vulnerable people at greater risk and raises serious concerns about consent and safeguards.

This does not minimize anyone’s pain. In fact, it does the opposite. It says your pain matters so much that you deserve care, treatment, protection and people willing to stay with you through it.

Yes, suffering can be unbearable. Yes, illness, disability, loneliness and hardship can push a person to the edge. But suffering does not suddenly make a human life less valuable, and it should never become the reason the healthcare system decides death is an acceptable response.

People will say, “You don’t know what they’re going through.” They’re right. We may never fully understand another person’s pain. But compassion does not require us to agree that death is the answer. We would never tell someone in any other crisis that because their suffering is severe enough, their life is now disposable.

The answer to suffering should be better pain control, better palliative care, better mental-health support, better disability support, better housing, better social connection and a healthcare system that fights for the person in front of it.

Calling this controversial does not change the principle: hardship is not a justification for intentionally ending a human life. People in pain need us to fight harder for them, not give up on them.

Indifference allows injustice to grow while innocent lives disappear in silence. St. Maximilian Kolbe reminds us that love demands more than good intentions. It calls us to speak, act, and defend those who cannot defend themselves.
