Keep an eye out for the Three Pigs Korean BBQ menu, you might just see these beauties there! But get there soon, they probably won't last very long!
Some people call me crazy when I tell them I often smell mushrooms before I find them, and sure I might be a little crazy but not for that reason! And I prefer mycocentric... but seriously, I was cycling home from the grocery store and smelled these Lobster Mushrooms(Hypomyces lactiflorum) from the road! And low and behold the were hanging out with a fantastic flush of Golden Chanterelles(Cantherellus cibarius)! In about ten minutes I had approximately 5lbs of each and had to get them right over to Three Pigs(because I love what they are doing there and also had no room for them AND groceries in my bike basket lol)! I find both of these species often associating with oak and beech trees, and they love a good summer rain/lightning storm like we just recently had, so now is a great time to keep an eye out for them!

Friends, it is finally time in our area to check your spots! Also fingers crossed that we don't get more frost overnight!
With these current and predicted conditions though, we should see some good flushes within the week! Go get em!

Pleurotus citrinopileatus "The Golden Oysters"
Though not native to this region, due to their popularity in the cultivated edible mushroom world for their tried and true trusted oyster mushroom flavor and texture, and their beautiful color, they have started to naturalize from spore escapees throughout the state of Michigan. It's hard to say in this early stage of their naturalization if there are any negative impacts to native species, so for now we will just have to enjoin the spoils! This is also particularly special for me as they the first I've ever found in this area!

Hypomyces lactiflorum "The Lobster of the Woods"
●Hypo in latin translates to "beneath/below/under" and myces simply means fungus. Lactiflorum translates to "of milk". What does this have to do with lobsters? In this case, the H. lactiflorum is actually a parasitic mold that attacks Lactarius species as well as Russula mushroom species, turning them into the delicious and coveted edible zombies we commonly know and love as "Lobster Mushrooms". This common name comes from the very lobster-like appearance, ranging from a soft orange to bright red exterior "shell" and white interior flesh, as well as the ocean or seafood like scent and flavor/texture similar to lobsters when properly prepared. The video shows a good example of where the Lactarius mushrooms get their name, as they "bleed" a milky latex-like fluid that is white in many species and is a blend of chemical compounds believed to be antimicrobial, protecting the damaged tissue from bacterial infections. Lucky for us, it does not defend against the mighty Hypomyces!

These beautiful Laetiporus sulphureus "Chicken of the Woods" REALLY stick out like a sore thumb on an oak stump in the middle of a lawn in sunshine! I wish they could all be this easy to find, such a tasty treat!
