“I know he’s dead, but I still need his authorization.”
An insurance representative actually said this to me while I was sorting out survivor benefits after my husband David died.
The strange thing was, I wasn’t angry with him.
He knew what he was saying made no sense. I knew it made no sense.
But he clearly wasn’t empowered to do anything about it.
Eventually, I asked whether David’s executor could provide the authorization.
Yes.
Wonderful.
I was David’s executor.
So I authorized the representative to speak to David’s widow.
Also me.
Problem solved.
I’ve thought about that conversation for years because it wasn’t really about insurance. It was about what happens when a process leaves no room for human judgment.

Not every opportunity is an upgrade.
We're taught to celebrate the people who say yes.
Yes to the promotion.
Yes to the investment.
Yes to the partnership.
But some of the most important decisions we make are the opportunities we decline.
This week, I'm sharing the story of Jenn Harper, founder of Cheekbone Beauty, who turned down an offer on Dragon's Den. It looked like a risky decision at the time. Looking back, it reveals something much deeper about discernment, values, and protecting what matters most.
The question that stayed with me while writing this essay was simple:
What am I protecting?
Sometimes clarity doesn't come from finding the perfect opportunity.
Sometimes it comes from knowing what you're unwilling to trade away.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned is that surrender isn't giving up. It's loosening our grip enough to notice what is already trying to help us.
A last-minute trip to Montréal became one of the clearest examples of this in my own life. We hadn't booked a campus tour. We didn't have much of a plan. Yet the day unfolded in ways we never could have arranged ourselves.
The experience changed how I think about surrender, receiving, and trust.
I republished this essay because the lesson feels just as relevant today as it did when I first wrote it.
