A DISCARDED PAIR OF GLASSES FINDS
NEW VISION IN MEXICO
John Preheim – presenter
Almost one hundred years ago Helen Keller challenged Lions Club International to end the darkness of preventable blindness to improve the quality of life for those suffering from vision impairment. Lions Club International accepted that challenge and since that time have millions of people throughout the world achieve improved vision.
A group of Lions Club members from northern Indiana have continued the challenge of improved vision and quality of life for people living in mountainous regions of central Mexico. This group has made annual trips to this region for well over 20 years. Each year unused eyeglasses are collected, sorted, washed, prescriptions read, and filed in order to be shipped to Mexico for the mission. This shipment of glasses includes about 14,000 pairs of glasses sorted and filed in over 40 prescription categories. During the week’s mission in Mexico, this inventory is used to match the prescription needs of about 3,500 people with eyeglasses to improve their quality of life.
This presentation will tell the story from the time a pair of glasses is donated until once again they improve the vision for another person. The work during the mission will be featured as well as multiple responses from people who received the gift of improved vision.
John Preheim is a retired educator who taught and had leadership positions in elementary, special needs and middle school public education. In his retirement years, John has volunteered for several service and school agencies. He and his wife Jo Ann are members of the Dunlap Lions Club and have participated in thirteen Mexico Eyeglass Missions. John is the inventory manager for the Lions District 25-G Eyeglass Processing Center as well as the manager of the selection area during the missions in Mexico. John and Jo Ann are the parents of two boys, both involved in the field of education.
We will have a box for donation glasses.
Our snow policy is that if Goshen High School is closed, our program is cancelled and we will reschedule.

Jo-Ann says "This course is a compact version of one of my favorite courses from my 25 years of teaching at Goshen College. It begins by exploring why we might fear death and then moves on to discuss the tradition of the “good death”. Next, we will reflect upon the rituals that help death be less disruptive to our lives, and, finally, we will consider what the living owe the dead with an emphasis upon private and public commemoration."
Jo-Ann Brant is professor emeritus of Bible, Religion, and Philosophy at Goshen College.

We are sorry to share with you that we are cancelling the whole LLI 2020 Spring Series. You may have already expected this with all that is happening to contain the spread of the Coronavirus. But it’s still a very difficult decision for us to make.
All of the classes have been rescheduled for either this fall or next spring.
Registrants can get a full refund for all Spring Series classes purchased, by contacting the Box office by Friday, April 3, 2020.
Registrants who do not request a refund by April 3 will automatically have their registration converted to a donation.
To receive a refund, please contact the Box Office by phone (574.535.7566) or email [email protected] only. You will receive an email confirmation.
Please note that the Music Center Building is currently closed to the public.
At this point we, as the LLI Curriculum Committee, are working on the LLI 2020 Fall Series as though it’s going to happen. We are very excited about the classes we will have to offer. So, if things go as planned, you will receive new brochures around August 1 and the kickoff event for the LLI 2020 Fall Series will be on August 11 at 3:00 p.m. in the Jennings Auditorium, Greencroft Goshen Community Center.
We’ll stay in touch. I hope you can stay warm, safe and healthy.
Please know what we at Lifelong Learning take the health of our members seriously. As you may be aware, the Govenor of Indiana has mandated that large public events be cancelled in order to slow the progression of COVID-19.
Therefore, you will see that we have cancelled our class schedule for this month. Please stay tuned in the next few weeks for information about rescheduling should that be possible.
We will be working on how to handle payments made for the classes and ask for your patience as we work thru this. It's a first for us as it is for you as well.
Thank you!
These are 7 simple steps to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
