Dyslexia: Myths vs. Facts

There are still many misconceptions about dyslexia.
It is not simply seeing letters backwards.
It is not caused by low intelligence.
Children do not simply outgrow it.
And reading more, by itself, is not the same as receiving appropriate instruction.
Understanding dyslexia helps us move away from blame and toward the explicit, structured support students need to succeed. 🌱💜
Awareness replaces myths with understanding.

Early Support Matters

When a child is consistently struggling to read or spell, we do not have to wait for them to fall further behind before providing help. 🌱
Early, appropriate instruction can strengthen foundational literacy skills, reduce frustration, support confidence, and help prevent academic gaps from continuing to widen.
The earlier we understand what a student needs, the sooner we can teach them in a way that works. 💜

Strengths of Students With Dyslexia

A reading difference does not erase everything a child does well. 💜
Students with dyslexia have individual strengths just like every other learner. Some may shine in areas such as creativity, problem-solving, curiosity, persistence, or big-picture thinking.
Our job is to provide support for the skills that are difficult while continuing to recognize and develop the strengths already there.
Different, not less.

Structured Literacy Helps

Students with dyslexia typically need more than additional reading practice—they benefit from instruction that is explicit, systematic, cumulative, and carefully sequenced. 🌱
Structured literacy directly teaches phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, encoding, syllable patterns, and other components of written language instead of expecting students to discover those patterns on their own.
The right instruction can change the path. 💜

Dyslexia Can Affect More Than Reading

Dyslexia is often associated with reading, but its impact can extend beyond simply sounding out words.
Students may also experience difficulty with spelling, reading fluency, written expression, rapid retrieval of language, and decoding unfamiliar words.
A child can be strong in many areas while still needing specialized literacy instruction. 💜
Reading challenges do not define a child.

Signs of Dyslexia

Dyslexia can look different from one child to another, but there are signs worth paying attention to. 🌱
Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words, slow or effortful reading, persistent spelling struggles, and frustration around literacy tasks may indicate that a student needs a closer look and more explicit support.
These signs alone do not diagnose dyslexia—but persistent struggles deserve attention, not a “wait and see” approach.

Dyslexia & Intelligence

A reading struggle is not a measure of intelligence. 💜
Children with dyslexia can be bright, creative, thoughtful, curious, and highly capable learners. Dyslexia affects the processing of written language—not a child's ability to think, understand, or succeed.
Sometimes the most important thing we can change is the way we teach.
Different, not less.

Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🍎💜
Today we’re celebrating the teachers who encourage, adapt, problem-solve, and keep showing up for their students every single day.
At Roots 4 Learning, we know how much skill, patience, and heart great teaching requires. We’re grateful for the educators in our own Roots family and for the teachers in our community who work so hard to help children learn, grow, and believe in themselves. 🌱
To all of the teachers making a difference every day — thank you.

Dyslexia is more than simply having difficulty reading. 🌱
It is a language-based learning difference that can affect decoding, word recognition, spelling, and reading fluency. It is not related to intelligence, and students with dyslexia are every bit as capable of learning and succeeding as their peers.
What often makes the biggest difference is receiving the right kind of instruction—explicit, systematic, structured literacy that teaches students how sounds, letters, syllables, and spelling patterns work together.
Awareness matters because the earlier we understand why a child is struggling, the sooner we can provide the support they need. 💜
Different, not less. Rooted in learning. Growing in confidence.
