“I can say that I used Fernald’s method of teaching reading to dyslexic children at the reading clinics of Syracuse University and at The University of Virginia. The unique combination of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile stimulation (thus the label VAKT) seemed to “fix” the recognition of words in learners’ minds. The method goes far beyond “look-say,” the method used with most beginning readers as they study flash cards and read words in sentences. For those children who need more than sight and sound as support in word recognition, VAKT can often provide the hook to memory and recognition that is often missing in cases of dyslexia.”
- Thomas H. Estes, Professor Emeritus, University of Virginia
