Phew! That's a wrap for and the summer in-person Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association STAR Advisory Board meeting in Canada. This week in Montreal has been so valuable. I have met with many CMT research scientists and clinicians, both established colleagues and brand new connections. These global connections inform our research funnel, are delivering our currently funded CMT projects, and help to guide our future strategic research priorities.

There have been many Alliance Partner meetings too, cementing our link with biotech and pharma partners working in the CMT space. We ensure they have access to the resources and expert key opinion leaders they need as they partner with us to develop new therapies for CMT. We talked clinical trial planning, which is always exciting, is the result of many years of research and capacity building, and takes advantage of the crucial infrastructure the CMTA has developed over the last 40 years to ensure we are clinical trial ready.

The impact of these meetings will continue to be felt over many months as we continue to accelerate CMT research.

There were also incredibly useful sessions at the PNS Conference around CMT and exercise that can help our community to live well today and be clinical trial ready themselves, more on this to come! I was grateful for the opportunity to put this into practice myself for an hour or so before my flight home with a couple of thousand steps around the Montreal botanic gardens.

Today marks a historic moment in the development of treatments for CMT.

We're excited to support DTx Pharma and Novartis as they continue development of DTx’s potential first-in-class medicine for CMT1A, DTx-1252.

The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association July 17 hailed the news that global healthcare giant Novartis is acquiring DTx Pharma and its CMT1A therapy DTx-1252 as a significant step forward for the acceleration of novel CMT treatments capable of reaching the peripheral nervous system. Under the terms of the agreement, Novartis will make an upfront payment of $500 million and additional payments of up to $500 million upon completion of pre-specified milestones.

According to CMTA Chief Research Officer Katherine Forsey, PhD, the acquisition highlights the progress made in positioning CMT as an attractive proposition to pharma, the founding principle of the CMTA’s Strategy to Accelerate Research (STAR).The CMTA has been increasing its collaborative work with DTx Pharma team members as they prepare for the commencement of first-in-human clinical trials of DTx-1252, Forsey said, adding, “We are excited by the prospect of continuing this work with the Novartis team and applaud their commitment to bringing life-changing medicines forward for patients with neuromuscular diseases like CMT.”

I am thrilled to be joining the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association as Chief Research Officer.

I'll be transitioning in to this new role over the next couple of months and would like to thank my colleagues at the Centre for Industry Education Collaboration and clients at Gratnells Ltd, STEM Learning UK and The Association for Science Education for their support. It has been a fabulous journey and I have loved working with you all.

This next chapter brings with it a huge opportunity to make a difference to the lives of people living with CMT. I'm looking forward to working with the CMTA-STAR community to drive forward our research efforts.
