Stay warm, pumas! ❤️📚❤️📚
WEATHER UPDATE: Although Henrico didn’t receive additional snow this weekend, many neighborhoods and school parking lots remain icy and unsafe for school buses. As a result, Monday, Feb. 2, and Tuesday, Feb. 3, will be independent, remote learning days for all Henrico County Public Schools students.
More than 100 HCPS Facilities team members and hired contractors are working 24 hours a day to clear ice and prepare buildings for students’ return. As you can imagine, freezing temperatures make this increasingly difficult. In addition to plowing parking lots, HCPS is also monitoring neighborhood conditions to assess when bus travel may be safe.
In the meantime, students will work at their own pace on assignments prepared in advance by their teachers. Completing assignments verifies your child’s participation, as required by the State to count as a remote learning day. There will be no live instruction; however, teachers will be available to answer questions. Students with disabilities will receive services and accommodations upon returning to school, before remote learning assignments are submitted.
• Grades K-5 (and pre-K): Students should complete the printed materials provided before the storm. Teachers will monitor ParentSquare and respond to families' questions throughout the day. Student work will be turned in when schools reopen, and teachers will give feedback.
• Grades 6-12: Students will access their assignments through Schoology or complete any printed materials provided in advance. Teachers will be available during the school day to answer questions via Schoology and ParentSquare. This is also a good time for students to check PowerSchool and complete any missing assignments.
Employees will telework if appropriate for their jobs. Staff will hear from their supervisor if in-person work is needed. HCPS Facilities: Code 1.
This winter storm has created challenges for our entire community, including HCPS. While remote learning is not a replacement for in-person instruction, it is an effective short-term solution during an extended school closure. Shifting to remote learning allows students to stay engaged with their schoolwork while helping the school division preserve some “banked time” and minimize potential disruptions to families if days or minutes were added to the calendar.
We appreciate your continued flexibility and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school soon. Thank you.
