/ R2 Ben Hung recently rotated in Soldotna and shared some insights on what makes it such a special place to train- check it out below!

My dearest PC GHITKU,
Greetings from the frigid north. I’ve had the privilege of learning how determined and talented our rural P*P colleagues are. From hacking tirzepatide pens to increase access for financially limited patients to wearing many different hats for the community (e.g. rheumatology, endocrinology, cardiology, etc), I’ve learned that grit gets you a long way in delivering care here. The attendings here are also gracious in teaching me how to drive the scope on an EGD and colonoscopy, read TTE’s, and inject joints.
The last frontier truly lives up to its name though. Bob, the bald eagle, greets me every morning as I gaze out at the hoarfrost lining the trees. I’ve attempted to cross country ski (more like it was 50% falling down), baked Alaskan sourdough, visited a beached Fin whale in Anchorage, and stayed out in the snow to watch the aurora (no luck). The most exciting part was hiking to Byron glacier and being held up for 30 minutes by a moose crossing (can’t escape that Seattle traffic!).
I’m sad to leave this place, but am excited for future residents rotating here in Soldotna, as well as the incoming PC Alaska R2’s (it’ll be here before you know it!) to experience the joy of rural primary care.
Steadfastly Yours,
Ben Hung, MD
