Oooh - the summer garden. In August. In Texas. In a heat wave. 🥵 It’s a wonder it’s not completely dried up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Harvesting all the herbs that I can while they are still flourishing. Several plants are still doing well. Peppers are loving the heat.
What’s growing in your garden?

*Hot* Texas summer - doing all we can to cool off our flock - A few things you can do to make a big difference for your birds -
💧 Plenty of fresh, cool water—check and refresh water throughout the day
🌳 Deep shade with good airflow - 🌬️ fans to create breeze if needed (make sure they’re safe 😉)
🍉 Cool, water-rich treats like watermelon or cucumber (in moderation)
🧊 Frozen water bottles or jugs placed where they like to rest, or in a kiddie pool with a few bricks in the bottom for them to stand on
🪣 Extra water stations so nobody gets pushed away from the waterers
🫶🏼Add in some electrolytes to the waterers - this helps replace what they’re losing when panting
We also try to do any coop chores early and leave the flock alone during the hottest part of the afternoon. On days like these, watch for panting, wings held away from the body, lethargy, stumbling, or a bird that separates herself from the flock—those can be signs she’s struggling with the heat.

And remember: chickens handle cold surprisingly well, but extreme Texas heat can become dangerous quickly.

🧡What are y’all doing to help keep everyone cool?🩵

Stay cool, friends—and keep those feathered babies cool too. 🐔🌿💦

This sweetie hatched today 😊
She’s just adorable.
She had pipped this morning under mom and later mom accidentally stepped on her egg, cracking it wide open a bit early. I was out there with them at the time and snatched her up, egg and all - gave mom another blue egg 😉 and ran her to the incubator. She finished hatching on her own and is moving all over the place 😊
We will slip her back under mom tonight and sneak that other egg back. 🤞🏻
