Nutz Music Lessons

I came up with some Halloween versions of wiggle songs (transposed to minor) and tried to come up with clever names. For example, we sang Zero instead of Bingo. So, while explaining how we’re doing the “Spooky Cookie” instead of the “Hokey Pokey”, a kindergartner goes, “the Hocus Pocus?”. How did I miss that opportunity?!?

Also, now I’m thinking the song is actually the plural version of Hocus Pocus and should be spelled “Hoci Poci”. 😮

Thinking about music and its relevance to every subject; I believe its relationship to science is often misunderstood or overlooked. I think the deeper comparisons relates to that of the scientific process. This process allows a single individual to discover the basic rules of music theory if their mind is fortified by curiosity, and perhaps in doing so, can reinvent music as the early jazz musicians have. I’m thankful for the teachers that spurred that curiosity and inspired me to strive to become a scientist at the piano.

What do you guys think? I've been reflecting on my teaching philosophy and thinking about how the greatest gift of music is learning how to learn. Practice teaches us that patience, a calm steady mind, and a focus on improving our weaknesses are key characteristics to effectively enhance our very learning capabilities. The journey of enlightenment is never ending, yet the earlier we learn how to learn most efficiently, the more life has to offer.
