Our officer team kicked off the 2025–2026 school year with an eventful retreat in St. Louis. During the retreat, they spent their time planning the many FFA activities coming up this year while also setting goals for the future. After a full day of hard work, everyone was excited to spend the very next day at Six Flags. The officers had a blast riding roller coasters, enjoying the attractions, and making memories together. This year's officer retreat was a huge success, and we are looking forward to an amazing year ahead!

Last week, our GCMS FFA members spent two incredible days learning firsthand about Kentucky’s world-renowned equine industry!

At Claiborne Farm, students toured the farm experiencing the life cycle of a Thoroughbred, visited the final resting place of the legendary Secretariat, and even had the opportunity to pet champion stallions Blame and War Front—an estimated $85 million stallion!

The adventure continued in Louisville with a visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum before wrapping up with an unforgettable morning at Churchill Downs. During our exclusive Backstretch Tour, students enjoyed breakfast trackside while watching horses train, toured the Derby Museum, and received a special invitation into Norman Casse’s stable. There, Andie Biancone—the soon-to-be NBC Sports Horse Racing Analyst replacing Donna Brothers—gave our students an up-close look at some incredible racehorses.

Experiences like these help bring classroom lessons to life and expose our students to the many career opportunities within the agriculture industry!

A huge thank you to the GCMS FFA Boosters for helping sponsor this incredible opportunity and to Dr. Emily Tucker-Davis for serving as a chaperone and sharing her passion and knowledge of the equine industry throughout the trip. Your support helped make this experience one our students will remember for years to come!

What an incredible week for our GCMS FFA members at the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC)! 🇺🇸💙💛

From June 21–27, our members Natalie Aberle, Sarah Higgins, and Keiragan Young had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., where they made new friends from across the country, strengthened their leadership skills, and developed meaningful Living to Serve (LTS) projects that they will bring back to our community.

The week began with travel from St. Louis to Washington, D.C. Before the conference officially started, the Illinois delegation visited Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, to learn about his life and legacy. They also experienced the solemn Changing of the Guard and a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

Students continued exploring our nation’s history with visits to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of American History, gaining a deeper appreciation for the people and events that have shaped our country.

Once the Washington Leadership Conference began, our members participated in leadership workshops, small community groups, and large conference sessions focused on developing themselves as servant leaders. One highlight of the week was an unforgettable evening tour of Washington, D.C., including stops at the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima).

Throughout the remainder of the week, students toured the U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the U.S. Botanic Garden, while also exploring several Smithsonian museums and experiencing many of the historic sites that make our nation’s capital so special.

As a part of a special project- Sarah, was selected to be featured in the week’s “We Will” video! She shared the importance of serving others and highlighted the Living to Serve project she will bring back to our community during the National Days of Service, July 26–August 1.

We are incredibly proud of these young leaders for representing GCMS FFA, Illinois FFA, and our community so well. A HUGE THANK YOU to our GCMS FFA Boosters for sponsoring the cost for our members to attend! We can’t wait to see the positive impact they’ll make with everything they learned this past week!

GCMS FFA has spent 3 fun filled days at the 98th annual Illinois State Convention in Springfield!

Day 1 consisted of listening to state officers retiring addresses and attending sessions. Wrapping up day one our FFA chapter was awarded the Silver Ranking of the National Chapter Award.

Day 2 was jam packed with members networking in the expo hall and listening to more speakers. Our chapter was also awarded the Foundation $4,000 Club Award. This award is given to chapters who were able to raise at least $4,000 for the Illinois Foundation FFA. During the last session that day, Kasen DeFries joined the 2% of Illinois FFA members that earn their state degree! We are so incredibly proud of Kasen for all of the hard work that he has put into getting the highest achievement Illinois FFA can give! In between secessions we were able to go to the Illinois History Museum and later that night our members participated in a holiday themed trivia night.

Day 3 was full of state officer elections. Our two delegates Kate McCall and Kasen DeFries had their work cut out for them choosing the future leaders of the Illinois FFA.

Our time at convention has been very impactful and we are very excited to come back again next year!

We kicked off day one with over 5,000 other members in attendance. Together we attended sessions, listened to state officers retiring addresses, and watched many dedicated chapters and members receive awards. This year our FFA chapter was awarded the Silver ranking of the National Chapter Award. Overall we had an amazing first day and we cannot wait to see what the next two have in store!
