Congratulations to our very own Grace Dies for her Junior Honors recital! What an amazing display of your talent and commitment to music and history!
Grace serves as our Sergeant at Arms and presented a recital that featured music influenced by Native Americans.
She writes: “ As a student of Music, Anthropology, and Public History, I thought doing a recital rooted in all the academic disciplines I am studying would be an exciting opportunity. I have always loved listening to Native American music. Although I do not play any of the types of Native American Autes found today, there are several pieces written for Western concert flute (and its color instruments) inspired by Native American cultures and histories. I thought this was a really neat example of cultural blending and creolization in the world of music, and a great opportunity to bring Native American-inspired music to new audiences. To my knowledge, all of the pieces I am performing today were made out of appreciation, love, and respect for Native American cultures. I believe that music can be a really cool way to learn about other cultures. Therefore, I created this recital out of appreciation, love, and respect, hoping to inspire conversation and interest in learning about cultures and histories outside one’s own.”
