On this day in 1831, David Wills was born. Wills was a driving force behind the development of the National Cemetery in Gettysburg. He was also instrumental in Lincoln's November 1863 visit to Gettysburg. During his one night in town, President Lincoln stayed at the Wills' home on the square.

To explore Wills' story and leadership, check out Leadership: Beyond the Battle, the Adams County Historical Society's professional development program that examines both military and civilian leaders and the roles they played during and after the Battle of Gettysburg.

In 1855, Abraham Lincoln said this: “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing."

While decisions from the Battle of Gettysburg were made more than 160 years ago, leaders of the 21st century can still learn from historical examples of communication, strategic planning, and team building that have stood the test of time.

In addition to discussing the military leaders at Leadership: Beyond the Battle - Gettysburg also provides lessons from ordinary civilians who took on extraordinary responsibility during and after the battle. Our program includes stops at fascinating historic sites off the beaten path and not open to the general public.
