Congratulations to Professor Yoko Nishimura for receiving the Faculty Award for Community-Based engagement! Professor Nishimura has worked with the Center for Public service to lead the Morocco immersion trip this past January, and is currently engaged in helping to prepare to welcome the delegation from Sekigahara, Gettysburg’s sister city in Japan!

Aidan Martin ‘26, IGS and Spanish double major, has been named an alternate for the Fulbright Program (ETA Grant – Spain). This is a significant and well-deserved distinction that reflects Aidan’s academic excellence, professionalism, and strong potential as a representative of the college.

IGS students and staff attended a thoughtful lecture from guest speaker Pavel Brunssen surrounding antisemitism and Jewish identity in European football clubs. The guest from Heidelberg spoke today in Joseph theater, then took questions from the audience.

Professor Nishimura teaches in the East Asian Studies Department and serves on the IGS Committee. She values IGS for the way it encourages students to stay curious, whether they’re studying a region they know well or one that’s totally new to them. The program, she says, invites students to ask big questions and rethink how the world fits together.

Her teaching focuses on helping students develop skills and ways of thinking that will serve them far beyond college. As U.S.–East Asia relations continue to grow more complex, Professor Nishimura hopes to support students who want to become cultural bridges between these parts of the world, especially through a sociological lens.

Her academic work spans archaeology, history, religion, language, and inequality in East Asia and the Near East. She focuses on the material lives of ordinary people, stemming from household objects to burial practices, and how these reveal stories about wealth, gender, and everyday life throughout history.

One key area of her research involves “diaspora” artifacts, which are items stored in museums far from where they were originally excavated. Her recent projects examine body ornaments, tools, and other domestic objects from third-millennium settlements in Japan and Turkey, highlighting how everyday items reflect broader social structures.

At Gettysburg, Professor Nishimura teaches courses on Japanese society and culture, including topics like wealth inequality, gender roles, U.S.–Japan relations, religion and anime, and World War II. For IGS students interested in East Asia, material culture, or global inequality, she offers a rich, interdisciplinary perspective and a thoughtful approach to global learning.

Meet Ole Beu, an IGS International Affairs and French double major with an Economics minor! In his own words, here’s how Ole’s IGS experience has shaped his future plans! 🌍

“Study Abroad:
I was teaching as a volunteer in Yaoundé, Cameroon for a year in 2022 and studied abroad in Nantes, France in the spring of 2024.

What I gained from my experience:
Studying and living abroad has given me a great opportunity to experience new cultures firsthand in a way the classroom never could have achieved.

IGS Advice:
My advice for someone entering the IGS field is to be open-minded.

Capstone:
My capstone project is about the legacy of colonial France in Cameroon‘s education system.

Plans:
My dream job is to work for the state department and become an ambassador representing my country worldwide.”

Professor Reid is a member of the Political Science Department, where she teaches courses in International Relations such as Introduction to IR, Global Conflict Management, Civil Wars and Political Violence, and Women, War, and Peace. Her teaching and research focus on how peace can be built after civil wars, especially in ways that are inclusive and lasting.

Her recent research looks closely at how civil war peace agreements are designed, particularly with how different provisions in those agreements affect women after conflict. She has presented this work at the United Nations with fellow Political Science professor Caroline Hartzell and will be conducting field research in Colombia in Summer 2025.

As a Gettysburg alum and first-generation college graduate, Professor Reid values the power of a liberal arts education. She works hard to create open, challenging, and welcoming classrooms where students from all backgrounds feel supported and inspired to think critically about global issues.

Her research has been published or is forthcoming in top journals, including International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Journal of Peace Research. She is especially interested in how civil war settlements, peace agreements, and third-party mediation can shape both how long peace lasts and how meaningful that peace is for communities.

From mentoring IGS majors to teaching about war, peace, and human rights, Professor Reid brings a deep commitment to inclusive education and global learning. Her real-world experience, from the UN to upcoming fieldwork, makes her an incredible resource for students interested in conflict, diplomacy, and international change.

With a passion for peacebuilding, inclusive education, and mentoring, Professor Reid empowers IGS students to think critically about conflict, justice, and the paths to global change.
