There’s a driveway somewhere in Springboro where a lot of this started. (For those that know the backyard holds memories and voices forever)
A basketball. Competition. Wanting to win. Wanting to get better. Falling in love with sports before I had any idea how much that competitive nature would shape my life.
I was raised well. I was loved, protected and taken care of. I had people who gave me every opportunity to become something good.
Then I got on my own…and for a long time, I couldn’t seem to get out of my own way.
I followed people. Followed the party. Followed whatever I thought was cool at the time. I made mistakes. Got myself into trouble. Lost friendships. Lost family. Lost my dad. Built myself back up, only to make more mistakes and knock pieces of it back down again.
And one of the hardest things to admit is that even now, in my 40s, some of those choices still have consequences. Some doors stay closed. Some relationships never come back. Some mistakes cost more than you ever imagined they would when you made them.
I could let that consume me.
I could go back to old habits. Be angry. Blame people. Feel sorry for myself. Decide that this is just who I am.
But I don’t want that to be the rest of my story.
My mission now is to level up. To finally mature in the areas where I should have matured years ago. To learn. To live differently. To become a better father, friend, leader, businessman and man.
Not pretending the past didn’t happen.
Not running from it.
Learning from it.
And maybe somebody reading this needs to hear this too:
It is never too late to reset.
Sometimes the reset is the gym.
Sometimes it’s God.
Sometimes it’s walking away from people and places you’ve outgrown.
Sometimes it’s closing doors you kept trying to force open.
Sometimes it’s finally being honest with yourself.
You can’t rewrite where you’ve been.
But you can decide what you do with everything you’ve lived through.
I’m still learning.
Still rebuilding.
Still fighting.
Still becoming.
And I’m not done.
