LEARNING IS EVERYWHERE

Our Pre-K students ventured beyond the classroom for their first nature walk on the beautiful trail tucked behind our campus!

After searching for the “secret entrance,” the children explored different tree-bark textures and identified oak and maple trees…putting lessons from their nature study program into action. They’ve been learning about the different types of bark, how bark protects trees, and the many ways it can be used.

Hands-on experiences like this encourage curiosity, observation, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. This experience also brings our Lead the Way Strategic Plan to life through its Enhancing the Experience priority, which calls us to create meaningful, engaging learning opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom walls.

At GDS, learning is everywhere—and we’re fortunate to have a campus where our youngest Spartans can explore, discover, and grow.

LET THE BATTLE BEGIN! 💙

Today, the entire Gaston Day community gathered in the gym to kick off Battle of the Blues and discover their teams: Navy Blue or Columbia Blue!

More than a competition, Battle of the Blues is a year-long, all-school experience designed to:
-strengthen relationships
-encourage leadership and service
-celebrate character
-build Spartan spirit!

Students, faculty, and staff will earn points throughout the year through team challenges, community service, school events, and acts of exceptional character—all leading up to Field Day and the crowning of our Battle of the Blues champion!

A MOUNTAIN OF MEMORIES

One of our favorite Upper School traditions is back!

Our juniors and seniors headed to the mountains Camp Merri-Mac for the annual Junior-Senior Retreat—a chance to step away from the classroom, strengthen friendships, build leadership skills, and make plenty of memories along the way.

From team-building and friendly competition to time spent simply enjoying being together, the retreat gives our 11th and 12th graders an opportunity to connect in a different way. For our seniors, it’s one more special tradition during their final year at GDS. For our juniors, it’s the beginning of their journey toward becoming the leaders of our Upper School.

They may come home a little tired, but they return with stronger connections, new memories, and stories they’ll be talking about long after the mountain air wears off.

In Lower School, learning is about so much more than what happens on a page.

It’s practicing the careful strokes that build strong handwriting. It’s strengthening fine motor skills through hands-on learning. It’s looking someone in the eye, offering a handshake, and learning how to confidently greet and connect with others.

These moments may seem small, but they are an important part of how we develop the whole child.

At Gaston Day, we’re building strong academic foundations while also helping students develop confidence, independence, communication skills, and the habits they’ll carry with them far beyond the classroom.

There’s no better way to kick off a new school year than with one of our favorite Gaston Day traditions, the Back-to-School BBQ!

Last week, our campus was filled with all the things we love about this community: students meeting their teachers, old friends reconnecting, new friendships beginning, and families coming together before the first bell of the year.

A big thank you to our Parents’ Association for hosting this annual tradition and giving our Spartan community such a warm welcome back.

The first day is officially in the books!

Campus was filled with smiles, hugs, high fives, and plenty of excitement as our Spartans returned for a new school year!

For our Middle and Upper School students, the day included Convocation,an important Gaston Day tradition that brings our community together to begin the year with purpose. Students reviewed expectations for the year, including dress code, and signed the Honor Code, reaffirming their commitment to integrity, respect, and responsibility.

And before everyone gathered, there was plenty happening behind the scenes! Our Student Body President and Vice President worked alongside faculty to put the finishing touches on Convocation, a great example of student leadership in action.

For the Class of 2027, today was especially meaningful: their last first day of high school. One more year of traditions, friendships, leadership, and memories before they take their next steps.

A Surprise 25 Years in the Making

For 25 years, Kathy Connor was one of the first faces, and often the first voice, welcoming people to Gaston Day School. So, it only seemed fitting that the place where so many first connections happen would forever carry her name.

Recently, we surprised Kathy with the dedication of The Connor Family Lobby, honoring her extraordinary service and the kindness and care she shared with generations of Spartans.

And when we say surprised, we mean completely surprised! With the help of her husband, John, who helped plan and orchestrate the entire celebration, family, friends, former GDS colleagues and alumni gathered to make the moment unforgettable. Swipe through the photos and you can practically watch Kathy realize what was happening frame by frame.

We also uncovered a little piece of GDS history: Kathy’s old voicemail greeting from our phone system. Hearing her familiar voice welcome callers back to Gaston Day brought plenty of smiles. After all these years, Kathy is still welcoming people to GDS. She’s with us forever.

Blutopia earns statewide honors!

Gaston Day School’s student arts and literary magazine, Blutopia, has earned Distinction in the 2026 North Carolina Scholastic Media Association statewide competition!

Based at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, NCSMA recognizes excellence in student journalism and media from schools across North Carolina. Earning Distinction means Blutopia demonstrated excellence across most areas of scholastic journalism, making this recognition an exciting reflection of the talent within our GDS community.

Our student writing had an especially impressive showing:

With first-place finishes in both Fiction and Nonfiction and second place in Poetry, Blutopia demonstrated remarkable strength among student literary publications statewide.
