📢 Car Rider Pick-Up Reminder

Please remember that all car riders must be picked up by 3:45 PM. Our staff members have other obligations after school and are unable to provide supervision beyond this time.

If you are unable to arrive by 3:45 PM, please consider using the school bus as an alternative transportation option.

Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and smooth dismissal process for everyone!

Good Evening Southwest Middle School families!

This is Dr. Davria with this week’s information and updates.

We are continuing to settle into our routines and procedures, and I want to thank our students and families for the great work you are doing. Our students’ positive behavior allows us to keep our focus where it belongs — on learning and academics. Please continue to encourage your student to make good choices, follow our expectations, and come to school ready to learn each day.

We have another busy week of Roadrunner athletics!

Our golf team has a match on Monday, our football team travels to Belmont on Wednesday, and our girls softball team travels to Holbrook on Thursday. We hope you’ll come out and support our student-athletes!

Finally, a few important reminders about arrival and dismissal.

Students should not be dropped off before 8:00 a.m. For car riders, please use the designated car-rider line in front of the school, stay in the line, and pull all the way forward. Please do not park or stop elsewhere on campus to drop off your student.

For our walkers, please remind students to stay on the sidewalks and use designated crosswalks. Students should never cut through the parking lot.

And for all drivers, please be patient and attentive as you enter and leave campus. Watch carefully for student walkers, buses, and other vehicles, and follow the directions of our staff during arrival and dismissal.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping us make Southwest Middle School a safe, positive, and focused place for our students.

Have a wonderful week, Roadrunners! And remember: Roadrunners rise to excellence — Ready, Respectful, and Relentless.

🔬⚗️ Nothing lost, nothing gained—just SCIENCE! 💙💛

Today, in Ms Bowlin’s lab, our 8th grade scientists put the Law of Conservation of Mass to the test! 🧪 Students mixed, measured, observed, and investigated to see how mass stays constant—even when things start bubbling and changing! 🫧⚖️

Who says learning science can’t be a little messy? 💙💛 Go science squad! 🔬✨

Good Evening Southwest Middle School families!

This is Dr. Davria with this week’s information and updates.

We continue to settle into our routines and procedures, and I want to thank our students and families for helping us get the school year off to a great start. Parents, please continue to encourage your students to keep up the good work they are doing. Consistency with our expectations and routines will be an important part of our success this year.

I also want to remind everyone about our cell phone and wireless device policy. Cell phones and wireless devices must be turned off and stored away for the entire school day. This is a Southwest Middle School expectation, a Gaston County Schools policy, and is required by state law. Please help us reinforce this expectation with your students.

A few additional reminders about student materials: SWMS requires clear backpacks and clear water bottles. If your student needs a clear backpack, they are available for purchase for $5 in our front office.

Picture Day is October 2. Picture packets were sent home with students as part of our beginning-of-year information. Please make sure your student brings their picture packet with them to school on Picture Day.

We also have a busy week of Roadrunner athletics! Our girls softball team plays Monday at Bessemer City Middle and Thursday at home against York Chester Middle School. Our football team travels to Stanley on Wednesday. We hope you'll come out and support our student-athletes!

Finally, a few regular reminders about arrival and dismissal. Please remember that students should not be dropped off before 8:00 a.m. All car riders must be dropped off in front of the school, so please stay in our car-rider line and pull all the way around and forward rather than dropping students off elsewhere on campus.

For our walkers, please remind your students to stay on the sidewalks and use designated crosswalks. Students should not cut through the parking lot. Drivers, please be especially mindful of our walkers, buses, and other vehicles as you enter and leave campus. Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and family's safety.

Have a great week, and remember: Roadrunners rise to excellence—Ready, Respectful, and Relentless!

Good Evening Southwest Middle School families!

This is Dr. Davria with this week’s information and updates.

I want to start by saying thank you for a fantastic first three days of school! It has been wonderful to have our students back in the building. Our Roadrunners have done an excellent job, and everyone is settling into the new school year.

As we move into our first full week, we want to encourage our students to keep up those positive behaviors. Starting the year strong is important, but maintaining those positive habits and choices throughout the year will be key to our students’ success. We appreciate your partnership in reinforcing expectations at home, such as cell phones should be off and away all day long, we keep our hands and our feet to ourselves, and we clean up after ourselves.

As a reminder, please continue to follow our arrival and dismissal procedures. Student drop-off begins at 8:00 a.m., and the school day begins at 8:30. For car riders, please remain in the designated car-rider lanes, pull all the way forward, and do not park and ask your child to come to you. For walkers, please remind students to stay on the sidewalks and use designated crosswalks rather than cutting through the parking lot. At dismissal, please be patient and mindful of our other vehicles, buses, and student walkers as we work to get everyone home safely.

Finally, we are excited for our first home football game this Wednesday! We hope you'll come out and support our student athletes. Please remember that, per Gaston County Schools, ticket prices are now $7. Also, bags are not permitted at athletic events except for small wristlets, diaper bags, or medical bags.

Thank you again for helping us get the school year off to such a great start. We are excited about what this year has in store for our Roadrunners!

Have a great weekend, and remember: Roadrunners rise to excellence—Ready, Respectful and Relentless!
