Today we honor the legacy of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas who were finally informed of their freedom, some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was those people, and the generations of Texans who came after them, who made the bold declaration to celebrate this day, marking a reality we know far too well in this country: freedom may be delayed, but it will never be denied.
Though our fight for freedom sadly continues, today we pause to celebrate and embrace the joy of our ancestors who believed in the possibilities of a more promising tomorrow. And in that joy, we remain anchored, steadfast in our pursuit of true freedom and justice for all.

Join Gary Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in “Taking Steps to End Homelessness and Hunger Together!” On June 13, 2026 at the Sojourner Truth House, 410 W. 13th Ave., Gary, IN. Registration opens at 8:00AM and the walk begins at 9:00AM. We are accepting donations and they can be made at the link below and also register for our team.
