I woke up this morning and felt a lot of gratitude for getting to celebrate my 55th birthday. Not everybody gets that privilege.

So I wanna take a moment to celebrate myself for traveling around the sun 55 times.

Getting older usually gets a bad rap. I love it. I love my gray hair, I love my wrinkles, I love my bald spot, I love everything that shows I have lived.

Of course, we all need to make some adjustments as we age and I am feeling strong and healthy and vibrant.

I wouldn’t want it any other way.

The power went out.

And something else came on.

Awareness.

Without the usual noise and light, I could see something I had been missing:

Darkness does not always mean danger.

Sometimes it creates enough quiet for us to notice what has been asking for our attention.

What part of yourself are you ready to stop fighting?

I would truly love to hear your answer.

Try this simple practice:

1. Write down the dark areas of your life. The pieces you avoid, hide, or wish were different.

2. Take a breath. Let those things be part of your experience without judging them or trying to change them.

3. When you are ready, tear up the paper or burn it safely. Let it go back to the universe.

Then notice.

What feels different in your body?

We spend a lot of time trying to get rid of the dark parts of ourselves.

The grief.

The fear.

The anger.

The uncertainty.

But what if those parts are not asking to be pushed away?

What if they are asking to be seen?

You do not have to like every part of your experience to acknowledge that it belongs to you.

Can you be with that for a second?

When the power went out, my body reacted before my mind had time to catch up.

That makes sense.

The body often knows before the mind does.

But once I stopped moving and let myself breathe, something shifted.

My eyes adjusted.

My breath slowed.

The darkness had not changed. My relationship with it had.

What do you notice when you stop treating every uncomfortable feeling like an emergency?

Last Thursday, the thunder was cracking, rain was coming down in buckets, and the streets looked like rivers.

Then...

POP. NO POWER.

My first instinct was pure urgency.

Find the candles. Grab the flashlights. Check my phone. Protect the food.

Because when everything suddenly goes dark, the body wants to DO something.

But what happened after the scrambling stopped surprised me.

You may not get to choose what happens to you, but you always get to choose the meaning you give it.

Not because choosing a new meaning makes pain disappear.

Not because grief needs to be fixed or gotten over.

Because meaning shapes what we carry forward.

As this week comes to a close, is there one meaning you are ready to question?

What meaning would serve you now?

Try this with one situation that has been weighing on you:

NOTICE
What meaning am I giving this?

QUESTION
Is this absolutely true... or is it the meaning I assigned to it?

CHOOSE
What meaning could help me move forward without pretending the pain is not real?

LIVE
The meaning I choose to give this is ______.

Then ask: If I truly believed this meaning, what would I do differently today?

One small action is enough.

“Grief is a marathon, not a sprint.”

“When are you going to be over it?”

Two very different ways of assigning meaning to grief.

I am not interested in declaring one phrase right and the other wrong for every person.

I am more interested in this question:

What does each meaning create in you?

Does it bring pressure? Permission? Shame? Patience? Hope?

You get to become curious about which meaning serves you now.
