So I played in a charity golf outing on Monday and I was paired with a wonderful older gentleman.

Think he was in his early 80's, smart, humble and could still hit the golf ball well.

I asked him at the dinner afterward what his key to a happy life was, and he told me he had great relationships. He said to focus on family and friends.

I then thought of a TED talk I saw a few years ago. He was a living example of this talk.

As this year of personal transition is progressing, one thing I really noticed is how truly unhappy most of my legal colleagues are. Not necessarily in all phases of their lives, just in terms of their careers.

I recently met with a good friend and attorney. We commiserated about our practices, shared our most recent "worst client/worst case" stories, talked about our families, etc.

And while we had our usual laughs, it wasn't as hardy as before. My buddy is usually the life of the party kind of guy, but he seemed a bit subdued. No doubt the trial he was on had a lot to do with it.

As we left, I realized how much our careers became our lifestyle, more like a chef/owner of a restaurant and less like a factory worker. It dictated who we hung out with, how we thought, and how much it generally consumed our daily life outside of the office.

When your career is a lifestyle and you end up not liking your career, then that means you don't like your lifestyle anymore.

I want to like my lifestyle again. Work in progress, but it's looking promising.

One of my recent golf playing partners was playing with a pretty old golf ball. We started talking about how new balls were really expensive.

He said he actually had a bunch of new balls at home, but liked using balls he found.

I asked, "So when are you going to use your new ones?". He was over 60.

I also told him golf balls have a sort of expiration date. He was surprised when I mentioned that.

I also have boxes of new balls at home. Plan to hit every one of them. If not now, when?

The thing that keeps me up some nights is the thought of the number of people in this world who never fulfilled their potential and successfully pursued their true calling. This happens especially when I meet someone who seems incredibly talented, smart and resourceful and then I find out they are doing something completely opposite of their best character traits.

Can you imagine if Yo-Yo Ma, one of the best cellists in the world, became an accountant?

Or if Tiger Woods went into insurance sales?

There is nothing wrong accounting or insurance sales, of course. What I am trying to get at is the calling. The match of the person to their calling is what I think about.

I don't care if Tiger became the number one selling insurance rep in his company; hell I don't care if he eventually became CEO of the company. He wouldn't have become TIGER WOODS, as we know him. One of the 2 greatest golfers of ALL TIME, with Jack Nicklaus.

I wonder how many people will never become their own version of Yo-Yo Ma or Tiger Woods, and we are deprived of their very talents to this day. Way too many people, in my view, settle for something less. Sometimes way less. When I think of true waste, I think of that.

The Mas and Woods of the world are really easy to spot. They were precocious talents, and thus the people around them could see right away what they were meant to do. Tiger was hitting golf shots on the Mike Douglas Show at 3 years old. In cases like this, it is clear that you have to give them love, support, encouragement, money, instruments (cellos and golf clubs), and then get out of their way and let the talent bear fruit.

But what of about people who don't know what it is they are called to do until they are much older? Supporting them is important too. Most people are not precocious talents; sometimes it takes time to develop the interest in their passion and find the calling.

But that doesn't mean they shouldn't find it and then pursue it. They owe to the world, their community, friends and family, and most of all, to themselves.
