It’s going to take me at least a year to mourn the loss of Dolly Parton and everything she meant to humanity.

ChatGPT: Describe me as if you’re warning someone about me.

Warning: Wally is the kind of person who will ask you a perfectly reasonable question and then somehow turn it into a 45-minute conversation about education, personal finance, sports, leadership, or why society is doing something completely backwards.

He’s dangerously curious. He doesn’t just accept “that’s the way we’ve always done it.” He wants to know why, who decided that, whether it actually works, and whether there’s a better way.

He will probably encourage you to get your finances together, build a LinkedIn profile, invest for retirement, and stop making excuses—all while casually telling you about something he just learned at 10:47 p.m.

He’s also a chronic overthinker with an educator’s brain. Give him a problem and he won’t just solve it. He’ll redesign the entire system that created the problem.

And whatever you do, do not say, “You should write about that.”

Because he absolutely will.

I wish we could talk about money as openly as we talk about everything else.

Because every now and then, I see someone’s lifestyle and think…

“Okay…what does the financial picture look like behind all of this?”

Multiple vacations a year.

A brand-new vehicle.

Dinner out every weekend.

Concerts, shopping, weekend getaways, expensive hobbies…

And I’m not judging. I’m genuinely curious about the math.

Are they making an incredible income?

Did they get help from family?

Did they inherit money?

Are they investing and managing their money extremely well?

Or are they financing a lifestyle they really can’t afford?

That’s the strange thing about personal finance.

You can look at two people from the outside and think they’re doing equally well.

Same house.
Same type of car.
Same vacations.
Same restaurants.
Same clothes.

But behind the scenes, one person could have a million dollars invested while the other could be drowning in debt.

You simply can’t tell by looking.

That’s why I’ve stopped being impressed by expensive cars, big houses, vacations, and everything people post on social media.

I want to know what’s happening behind the scenes.

What do they own?
What do they owe?
What are they saving?
What are they investing?
And most importantly, can they actually afford the life they’re living?

Because there’s a HUGE difference between looking rich and actually being financially secure.

One is about what people see.

The other is about what you’ve built when nobody is looking.
