This past weekend Mrs. Duerr took four students to the FBLA State Conference in Springfield. Achillies Morales competed in the "Intro to Business" event, Cameron Einsweiler and Dani Bello-Yanes competed in the "Event Planning" event, and Justin Lin competed in the "Data Analysis" event.
I am pleased to announce that Justin Lin won 1st place in his event and will now advance to Nationals and compete in San Antonio Texas in June. Illinois is one of the most difficult states to compete in, not to mention all the schools we compete against have 1200 or more students in their high school. We are so happy and excited for him to have this opportunity.
Our chapter was also recognized with the Presidential Membership Award, receiving 3rd place in the state. This is an honor that chapters receive for their successful increase in their membership engagement and enrollment.
Last but not least we also had students that took an objective test in Mrs. Duerr's classroom and were recognized in the top 10 for the state of Illinois. Lex Abt placed 5th in Accounting and Evon Main placed 7th in Cybersecurity. So many exciting things happening in our chapter!

Ted Williams, the owner of the Dowling House and Galena Ghost Tours gave some of my FBLA students a ghost tour tonight. The tour was 90 minutes long and very informative. The students and myself really enjoyed it. Thank you Ted for taking time out of your night to give us a tour.

Intro to Business class is working on a human resource unit where the students have to work in groups and teach a lesson to the other students on their chosen topic and come up with an interactive game that also relates to their topic. Today's group taught a lesson on employee relations where they were put into groups of three and had to work together to make slime, although one student is blindfolded, one wears noise-canceling headphones and one cannot speak. This was a great way to end the week and have the students collaborate while still learning!

We celebrated National Oreo Day today! We talk about the marketing behind Oreos and the students did a case study where they learned so much about them. They were treated to different kinds of Oreos and even Mrs. Duerr's mom made her famous oreo balls for all of the students. March 6th is always a fun day in business class!

Joellen Holland who is the Human Resource Manager at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa came in to speak to our class last week. She spoke about all of the responsibilities that she has in her role and the students really enjoyed her examples she gave us of different situations and how she handles them. Four of our FBLA(Future Business Leaders of America) students placed in the top 10 at Area Conference for the objective tests in the following areas;

Evon Main-2nd place in Cyber Security
Lex Abt-4th place in Accounting
Riley Gutzman-9th place in Intro to Retail & Merchandising
Luna Pham-10th place in Healthcare Administration

They will now take a test at the state level at the end of February.

Ted Williams came in to our Intro to Business classes this week to talk about entrepreneurship and how he became successful with the businesses that he owns in Galena. He is the owner of The Haunted Galena Tour Company, A Darkness Lovely, and the Dowling House. He is also our current Poet Laureate of Galena. He shared so many inspiring stories with us and the students are very thankful that he took time out of his day to come share his story with us.

Last month the Intro to Business classes learned how to write/type a formal business letter. Their first assignment was to choose any company that they wanted to write a letter to and explain to them why they use/buy their products. Colton and Jeb both received letters from their companies on Friday. Jeb wrote to Stock X, they sent him back a very nice letter and two coupons a $25 and $50 off his next purchase, what a thoughtful gift! Colton wrote to Bruce Bolt, they sent back a letter with some stickers and a signed photo from the CEO.
