Hello!
The Life Satisfaction and Excellence Lab is currently recruiting for the Fall 2022 semester.
Our lab is unique in the fact that although it is advised by Dr. Heesacker, we are undergraduate run. We brainstorm research ideas, build the studies, run the studies, analyze the studies, and even write the manuscripts! We develop and conduct studies that examine factors related to achieving one's important goals and enhancing one's life satisfaction. This lab is great for those who are interested in research and who are aligned with our research area.
We are searching for dedicated, achievement-oriented sophomores and juniors with an interest in counseling and/or industrial/organizational psychology graduate school. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be willing to make a minimum 2-semester commitment to the lab. Our general body meetings will be held once a week. Members are also expected to meet in small groups to work on lab studies and help in fundraising efforts. We need all applicants to be motivated, innovative, goal-oriented, team players, and display high levels of personal initiative due to the nature of the lab.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please fill out the attached survey. The survey does not need to be completed all at once. If you use the same browser and computer, you will be able to begin from where you left off.

Consulting Project members host brief 20-minute sessions with students each week to discuss their barriers to success and brainstorm solutions based in research and course materials. Featured Study Friday: Reflective Listening and Advice-Giving
Senior Victoria Moore leads this study which will explore individuals’ receptivity to advice-giving.
“We all want to be heard and understood. Oftentimes, we benefit simply from venting, processing our thoughts/emotions with another and hearing that someone understands. This support can be provided through reflective listening, and research indicates that reflective listening is sometimes all the support that one needs in times of stress. All too often, we are met with advice or unsolicited input. This can be even more isolating and counter-productive to our well-being. This study will investigate individuals’ responses to advice-giving and aims to establish the factors that must be present for advice to be appropriate and effective, and to determine the contexts that simply warrant reflective listening. It is our hope that these results will promote positive outcomes for individuals experiencing distress by allowing us to better inform mental health services and promote healing interpersonal relationships in all contexts. We will be conducting Zoom interviews to assess participants' experience with a most recent advice-receiving episode and their reactions to it and will be using the Enhanced Critical Incident Technique (ECIT) to analyze our data and findings. We have recently received IRB approval and will be moving forward with the interview process in Spring 2022!”
