FAB is a student-led organization that sends out service trips based on a social issue during academic breaks.

FAB sends service trips out over four different academic breaks (winter, MLK weekend, spring, and summer). Each trip is centered around a different social issue. Trips learn about their issue in depth and perform pre-trip service in Gainesville in preparation for the direct service on their break.

Our next site leader highlight is Tyler Greek, a senior from Melbourne, FL. Tyler applied to be a site leader after learning about FAB from friends who were currently involved. He says “Hearing about their experiences led me to apply because leading a trip seemed like a great way to get involved in the organization. The best part about being a site leader is getting to know your trip participants and community partners.you get to learn a lot about people from different backgrounds and about the missions of different organizations.”. A fun fact about Tyler is that he produces music with his brother in his free time! If you want to be a site leader, applications are currently open and can be found at https://ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_26xlNNEG6RsYAE6

This weeks site leader highlight is Ilana Farrell, one of our amazing first-year site leaders! Ilana says “I applied to be a FAB site leader after my amazing trip to the everglades over winter break last year. The trip was so inspiring and fun, I wanted to be able to make experiences like that possible for others too. I also love what FAB stands for and the emphasis on truly understanding the issue for a more lasting change. I am especially passionate about environmental and sustainability related issues. The best part about being a part of FAB are the passionate and inspirational people I get to meet and work with, both in the community and as my fellow site leaders and participants.”. A fun fact about Ilana is that she is currently doing research with duckweed!

Registration is still open for the final movie in our Watch and Discuss series, the comedy-drama film The Florida Project. The follow-up conversation will focus on the themes of child development, poverty and hidden homelessness.

This film is set on a stretch of highway just outside the most magical place on Earth, Walt Disney World, where 6-year-old Moonee lives with her single mother in a motel. The film follows Moonee and her ragtag playmates as they court mischief and create their own adventures, while her struggling mother and kindhearted motel manager protect the kids from the harsh reality that surrounds them.

Don’t forget to register for the next movie in our Watch and Discuss Series! The follow-up conversation will focus on racism, micro aggressions, and other themes presented in the movie. We will also have guest speaker Tiffany Richards from UF’s Multicultural and Diversity Affairs joining the conversation about these social issues.

This film tells the story of Chris and his girlfriend Rose as they go to visit her parents for the weekend. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s in*******al relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

This event will take place in the Reitz Union Auditorium following all COVID protocols, and will also be available to stream synchronously. Streaming information will be sent to you after registering. To participate, please register at https://ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2uFmnjKmLC8Ta4u
