Oftentimes the questions are hard, but the answers are easy. 💛

We stress ourselves out and overcomplicate our role as parents by trying to ensure that our children have the best foods, best car seats, best schools, best doctors, best tutoring, etc because we want to give them the best life. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with any of those things, I can assure you that none of it will matter if they don’t have the best of us. 🥴

When you’re feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility of parenting your child, you typically don’t show up as your best self. So, default to the basics. Before your child needs another journal, another sports team, another tutor, more vacations, more toys, or anything else they first need YOU.

Children need to feel:
💚 Seen
💛 Heard
💚 Loved

With those three things in place a lack of everything else won’t matter at all. Without those things in place an abundance of anything else won’t matter either. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Do you know how your child likes to feel seen, heard, and loved? If you don’t know, get curious this week and try to figure it out through conversation and observation. You may be surprised by what you find! 💛

This is a tough pill to swallow for some of us, but it’s the truth. 🤷🏽‍♀️

If you’ve been around a child for more than 10 minutes, you know that they are great imitators. The question is, are you modeling something you want them to imitate?

Do you teach your children about integrity, but then turn around and put soda in the “water cup” you requested from McDonalds? 🥴

Do you teach your children to be honest, but then lie to the school about why your child is late? 😬

Do you teach your child to use kind words, but then use hurtful language towards your spouse (or worse, your child)? 😮‍💨

Children hear what you say, but they follow what you do. I’m challenging you (and myself) today to be a better example of a decent human!

I’m starting small by cleaning off my desk! 😭 I’ve been asking my nine year old to clean her desk for weeks and it’s still messy. As I sat down to work this morning I noticed my desk was worse than her desk! 🙁 So, the plan for this afternoon is to clean my desk and then help her to organize her desk.

What is the one thing you can do today to be a better example for your child? Let me know in the comments! 💛

I know this may shock you but, children actually LIKE structure! 🤯

Think about it. 🧐 How often do you hear a child say, “That’s not fair” or “He’s not following the rules of the game”? Pretty often, right? It’s because rules and routines build structure for children, and with structure comes a sense of safety and security.

Safety and security are so critical that Maslow put them as #2 on his hierarchy of needs! 😬

Time travel with me for a second and think back to when you were a child….

…wouldn’t you feel unsafe if some days your mom came home and some days she didn’t?

…wouldn’t you feel insecure if sometimes your parents kissed you goodnight and other times they didn’t? •
…how would you feel if some days you ate dinner at 5pm and other days you ate at 8:30pm?

It’s not about the activity, it’s about the consistency. While those examples I gave were a little more extreme, children crave structure and consistency across the board (even with discipline and correction).

Children live in a world where most of their lives and decisions about their lives aren’t within their control. They don’t control where they live, where they go to school, who their parents hang around, where their parents take them to church…the list goes on! 😩

BUT I believe that the absence of control requires the addition of consistency. ( ) 😉

My children may not like that they have a bedtime, but they consistently know that it will happen every night so it is normalized for them and creates a sense of security. They can predict it, and because they can predict it they are able to self regulate. And of course, because they’re able to self regulate, I don’t often find myself in enforcement mode.

Tell me in the comments: What’s an area in your parenting where you could be more consistent?

For me, without a doubt, it’s reading WITH my kids every night. I’m often working or trying to decompress from my day when they’re going to bed. Instead of reading with them I take the lazy route of having Annelise read to her little sisters 🥴

Can we please normalize what parenting REALLY is? 😬

For me, parenting is:
Challenging
Life Changing
Fulfilling
…but also the best thing I’ve ever done. 💛

It’s crazy to think that the most challenging thing I’ve ever done is also the best thing I’ve ever done…but that’s life, right? 🤷🏽‍♀️ I think about athletes, business owners, and anyone else who has to face challenges while working towards success. The challenges are difficult in the moment, but they make the success feel SO GOOD because it took some real work to get there!

I’m glad parenting isn’t easy. In fact, the challenges not only make the successes feel worth it but the challenges also keep us fully engaged and in tune to how we can improve on a regular basis.

If I naturally had abs and nice muscles y’all would NEVER see me do a single workout…ever! 😂 But because I struggle in that area I have to put in some real work if I want to see real results.

If you are struggling in your parenting today, just know that you’re building your muscles and you WILL be better on the other side if you lean into the challenge instead of avoiding it. 💪🏽

Talk to me: What is parenting for you? (Honest answers only 😜)

It’s Friday! 🥳 In the Crest household that means it’s Crazy Night 😜

We eat junk food, stay up late, watch movies, play games, and just do ALLLLLL the things! 😆 Crazy Night was one of my favorite traditions growing up and I love that my kids love it too. It feels so good to just let our hair down and have a few hours of pure fun without limitations.

I was thinking earlier about the harsh reality that we only have approximately 936 weeks from the day our child is born until the day they graduate high school (thx + ). While I knew that fact, what made me pause today was realizing that means only 936 crazy nights, and since one of my kids is 9 years old half of those have already come and gone! 😭

As the number of crazy nights left dwindles down I’m reminding myself to pause and soak in all of today. I can sometimes become so forward thinking that I forget to embrace the here and now. Today’s crazy night might be crazier than ever! 😆

Do you have any Friday night traditions? Let me know in the comments! 💛💚

Truth Bomb: Some days I can get so busy with work and that I'll look up at the end of the day and feel like I didn't spend enough quality time connecting with my kids.

Sure I fed them, talked to them, and showed them love and affection but connecting is a bit different. Connection moves us beyond the surface needs and addresses a much deeper need; the need to feel seen, heard, and loved.

📌Reading with my kids helps me to slow down and connect with them in a very low pressure environment. Unlike joining in their play (which can take forever), I know that I can choose a book that aligns with the amount of time that I have available to spend with them. For example, I may choose a short book to read with them between Zoom meetings if I see that they're yearning for my attention but I only have 10 minutes to spare. This is also a great way to get my highly spirited child to calm down and reset her body for a few minutes.

📌Going for a walk is one of my favorite ways to connect with my kids! Being outside, especially when the sun is shining, increases our moods. I also love that it limits all distractions so the kids can talk freely with me about whatever is on their mind. Sometimes I'll also bring along a scavenger hunt or conversation starters for my four year old who tends to be less talkative.

📌When I have more time I love to connect with my kids through creativity. I love to create, and so do most children. When you sit with your child to create something you're working together towards a common goal. This is great for when you and your child may be having a rough season (helloooooo pr***en hormones!) because they no longer see you as the enemy and instead view you as their partner. This is also a great way to become more familiar with your child's talents and abilities! There's nothing quite like the look of pride on their face when the project is completed!

Tell me, how do YOU connect with your kids? I'd love to hear from you in the comments section!

Don’t get so busy loving on everyone else today that you forget to love on yourself too! 💛⁣

What’s your favorite form of self love?⁣
•⁣
Lately mine is yoga! I love the way my mind and body feel after I’ve finished my practice. Aches and pains are reduced (cus being in your 30s ain’t easy 😆) and my mind is much clearer. I love that it’s something that energizes me at the beginning of the day, but also has the ability to calm me down at the end of the day. ⁣
