Engaging in play with your child is one of the simplest ways to connect with him or her. It shows them that they are important to you.

It doesn’t take much time. You can set a timer on your phone for 10-15 minutes of time devoted solely to playing. That little bit of time can make a huge impact on your relationship with your child.

What is it about water that kids love? It’s mesmerizing!

My boys can play in the water table for half a day during the summer, so I thought why not bring some of that fun inside?

Water play is one of the easiest set ups and clean ups you can do! You can use any kind of bin, container, bowl, or even a sink. You can add in any kind of kitchen utensils, cups, or toys. All that you need for clean up is a towel!

Children’s “sensory memory” is developed when they have sensory experiences. Our sensory memory helps us understand things and gain knowledge.

For example, my youngest went down a big slide at the park this morning. He fell at the bottom because he was going fast and isn’t coordinated enough yet to keep himself up. The next time he wanted to go down that slide, he called to me for help.

This activity will help him later on when he encounters a new, large play thing. He will likely be more cautious and he may call for help. He will remember his experience with the big slide and use the information from that experience to solve future problems.

You likely have many taste-safe sensory bases right in your own kitchen. Here are just a few I quickly grabbed for examples!

Simply put the base into a container and let your baby/toddler explore! Add in kitchen utensils or toys or not!

In Kindergarten, there is almost no time at all in the day for play. They are expected to sit and meet rigorous academic expectations. This is by no fault of teachers- most K teachers know the importance of play in terms of child development.

As I sit here and type this, it hits me that in just two short years, my oldest will go from playing all day long to having to sit and meet those expectations. So, we will soak up these days of endless play and let his brain grow, imagine, explore, and inquire in its own unique way.
