⭐️ How do you incorporate inclusive language on or off the field?
⭐️Do you find inclusive language important?
I was not raised in a home or athletic environment that used inclusive language. I was taught that being heterosexual is the norm, and everything else is “a lifestyle choice.” Because of this belief I believed that being q***r was “bad.” Although many people would look at me and assume I was q***r, I didn’t speak about being q***r for fear I would not be included or accepted. This effected my life on and off the field greatly. I perceived that my heterosexual teammates already had an advantage over me, and because of this belief, they did. Being q***r, one of the greatest gifts about me, is something I hid in the shadows deep within myself. This came with strong feelings of shame and unworthiness.

The irony of all of this is that my q***rness is my gift to the world, because today I know that it is our differences that expand the universe, not our sameness.

Adopting inclusive language is another gift I can give to myself and to the world. It frees us all from binary thinking that we are this or that. It allows us humans to recognize that we are much more than our human suits. We are spirits having a physical experience. That life is created through us, through our own power and light.

I ask this question to the sports world. When are we going to recognize that in order for an athlete to play at their best they have to accept, and be allowed to bring all parts of who they are everywhere?

I recently asked the question to a friend what would make me “unhirable” at the college softball level? The answer was I am too political on social media. Most college coaches don’t share their lives and opinions on social media. I recognized that again I was up against the belief that the only way to experience the sports world is through a homogenized heteronormative lens.

As q***r coaches do we really believe that we have to compartmentalize parts of ourselves to make others feel more comfortable? When will we decide that we will no longer speak in heteronormative language? When will we recognize that we are only protecting the heterosexual world, and not creating a safe space for all?

Today I walk proudly in my q***rness because it is a part of this human experience that I chose to experience. I walk proudly to be an example for all the little Jenny’s out there that may be q***r, or different from the default/homogenized body. To be the example that we don’t have to hide or be ashamed of any parts of ourselves. And if we do fit into the heteronormative world we can know, appreciate, and accept those that are different then us. Today I use language that was not demonstrated to me, that is inclusive such as “when you date a boy, or girl, or trans or non-binary human….”

When will we recognize that as coaches and mentors we are required to have the courage to accept the fullness of who we are as Divine beings created perfectly as we are, and then allow, and ask the same of our athletes?

7th grader working on his throwing fundamentals. He came to his first lesson throwing side arm. This is lesson #2 making progress!

I slowed this video way down to show a few things I talk about all the time with catchers.
#1 we never get the ball up to the ear, we are lucky if we transfer at the arm pit. As you can see from this video Yadi transfers this ball around his waste.
#2 our arm has to get all the way to a 90 without pausing, and be in continuous motion.
