One of my favorite things is spotting a song or game students are already playing out at recess and bringing it into the music room!

“Zapatitos Blanco, Zapatitos Azul” has been in my kindergarten collection for a while, but we hadn’t explored it yet this year. I LOVED using it to practice steady beat and rhythm. The very student I saw leading it at recess was able to be the teacher in music too!

Student-led and meaningful music making.

“To help each other when it’s tough. To say together, I am enough.”

Yes, I teach music, but also that my students belong in this world and deserve to take up space.

I pair the book, “I am Enough”, by Grace Byers, with a four quarter note easy rhythm to play.

What if composition felt like play? 🎶

Moving around, cheering each other on, and working as a group can composing come alive. Music is communal, fun, and a gift we give our students for life. See the energy, the creativity, and celebrate the victories. 💫

Rhythm Heads Up | 2nd Grade 🎵

Students each receive a rhythm card and hold it on their forehead. When the activity begins, they must find their matching rhythm by carefully reading and listening to one another. 👀👂

This activity builds collaboration, teamwork, and music literacy skills. 🤝

Before cleanup, we bring it all together by reading our rhythms simultaneously — a memorable (and noisy!) moment. 🎶

🎵 A busy and joyful week in music! 🎵

🎶 Kindergarten – We practiced playing the rhythm and played instruments for a fun winter song ❄️🥁🎶

1st Grade – We read quarter notes and eighth notes, played fun singing games and instruments ♩♫🔔🎶

2nd Grade – We learned how to write “do” on the music staff! Not pictured: students had a blast playing Snowball Splat while reading rhythms with half notes 🎼⛄🎶

3rd Grade – The Nutcracker March came to life with our parachute and snowballs! So much laughter and learning as we played, sang, and read a favorite book, “The Nutcracker in Harlem” 💃❄️🎶

4th & 5th Grade – Students embraced Hour of Code and created their own musical arrangements on their Chromebooks 💻🎧

🎅🍪 Thursday was our annual Cookies with Santa! Our 4th and 5th grade choir performed beautifully and even put their round together during our 15-minute warm-up. I am incredibly proud of their hard work, focus, and the wonderful music they shared 💕🎶

What a magical week filled with music, creativity, & smiles! ✨🎄

One more week until winter break! ❄️
