Take action for snakes 🐍

Here’s your chance to start the year strong and make a real difference for snakes, other reptiles, and amphibians. Louisiana’s wildlife is at risk from commercial exploitation and the release and relocation of reptiles and amphibians. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is proposing stronger protections for Louisiana’s native reptiles and amphibians. We need to tell decision-makers that the people of Louisiana and other wildlife enthusiasts overwhelmingly support these important protections. Regardless of where you live, your voice will make a difference here!

TAKE ACTION: http://www.livingwithsnakes.org/la

The proposed protections will:

✅ Strengthen protections for rare species;

✅ Protect turtles from overharvesting;

✅ Protect wildlife from disease and other risks by prohibiting unauthorized release or relocation of captive or wild animals;

✅ Improve welfare for captive reptiles and amphibians; and

✅ Prohibit wildlife-killing contests that target amphibians and reptiles, including the Lake Providence Snake Rodeo!

In the decade we’ve worked on snake-killing festivals, this is the best chance we’ve had to end one. But we need your help. The Louisiana Wildlife Commission can prevent these protections from moving forward, so they need to know there is strong support. Please email your supportive comments to Keri Lejeune, State Herpetologist, at [email protected] by 11:59 p.m. CST, Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

No time to compose an email? No worries, there’s a tool on our website that generates customizable comments in support of the protections — it’s fast and easy!

Pennsylvania’s smallest species of owl spent a short seven days recovering at Red Creek! This Northern Saw-whet Owl came to us from an owl banding research site in Schuylkill County. The study by the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art is carried out by trained researchers and volunteers who harmlessly capture, band, and release these elusive owls to better understand their populations and migration patterns.
When a researcher had collected the data from this little lady, he went to release her but she did not fly off. After giving her some time to rest, he tried to release her again but she still would not fly. Fearing she had hurt her wings or over-exerted herself during the process, he reached out to see if we could take a look.
Upon exam, she did not have any broken bones or major swelling, so our staff simply allowed her time to rest. Within a few days, she was more energetic, and after being moved to a flight enclosure, she was flying gracefully and released a few days later.
Northern saw-whet owls are rare for us to see in a rehab setting, but we are thankful to have given her care and sent her back to the skies. Please note, her injuries were accidental and we are grateful that the researchers acted quickly to get her help when she needed it! Their staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that we are able to learn about this elusive species in the safest way possible.

"A pair of bottlenose dolphins were hunting in sea grass beds within the Hastings River of Port Macquarie, NSW. Suddenly, one of the dolphins surfaced with an octopus stuck to her. The dolphin leapt around like crazy in an attempt to dislodge the octopus. She eventually did dislodge the octopus and as originally planned, she ate it." 📸+ nature sight: Jodie Lowe
