One year later - this is what uniform looks like đ±
These Yolo agave were planted as rooted plugs last year and this is what they look like today.
Consistent spacing. Even growth. Strong, healthy plants across the field.
Starting with plugs helps create that consistency early on. Hijuelos can achieve the same result, and they can shave 1â2 years off time to maturity.
These were planted using the method we showed in our recent reel.
Off to a strong start.
Wednesday morning on the farm đ±
These are Yolo plugs - grown from quiotes off our own plants. After some time in nursery trays, theyâre finally strong enough for the ground.
Weâre planting them 4.5 feet apart (~806 plants per acre) to give each plant room to grow. This variety gets big.
Starting with rooted plugs creates a much more uniform field compared to planting hijuelos, which tend to vary in size. Itâs also a lot easier on the crew doing the planting.
Using a transplanter makes the process faster and more cost-effective than doing it all by hand.
Simple. Satisfying.

Weâve been working on a better way to cut our mature agave piñas.
Why?
Theyâre ridiculously heavy for one. Breaking them into smaller, more uniform pieces makes them much easier to handle. But splitting them with an ax is backbreaking work!
Our first attempt? A log splitter.
High force. Clean cuts⊠in theory.
In reality, we learned pretty quickly that agave doesnât cut like wood. The dense, water-rich fibers donât fracture the same way. We ended up with more of a mess than clean pieces.
Back to the drawing board.
So the guys built something new from scratch. Over a ton of steel, powered by a tractorâs hydraulics and designed to apply controlled vertical force exactly where itâs needed.
The result?
Clean, repeatable cuts. No tearing. No crushing.
Itâs still a work in progress, but weâre pretty fired up about this one!

Planting 31,100 EspadĂn hijuelos today đ±
These young plants came from offshoots of our 3-year-old EspadĂn plants, harvested just last week (see previous post). Each one is a genetic clone of its mother plant.
Before going into the ground, every plant is dipped in a root stimulant called Dip âN Grow. This helps promote root development, nutrient uptake, and stronger early growth.
These plants are 100% California grown, harvested from our own fields here in California and replanted to grow the next generation.
Whatâs remarkable is how quickly agave multiplies. One plant produces offshoots. Those offshoots become new plants. And before long, those plants are producing their own.
In a few years, weâll be back in this same field harvesting the next generation of pups and restarting the cycle.

Great having Fresno Stateâs Ag Business Club out at the farm last week.
About a month ago, one of the club members reached out about visiting. Last Friday, the group loaded up in vans and made the trip out to Huron. Around 25 students and a couple faculty members stepped out ready to learn.
Over the next couple hours, they got a look at what weâre building here and what we hope this crop can become. The group toured the fields, harvested their own hijuelos, and asked some great questions about the industry and opportunities ahead.
Many already had ties to agriculture, which made the conversations even better.
It was awesome hosting them and a great reminder that thereâs a strong next generation ready to keep advancing this field.

Variety Round Up đ±
Five years ago we planted 11 agave varieties in our test plot to see how they would perform in Californiaâs Central Valley. Since then, that number has grown to 18 varieties as we continue expanding the trial.
The original 11:
Yolo, Mapisaga, Lemeno, Weberi, Americana, Oaxacacensis, Deserti, Salmiana, Potatorum, Sequins, and Desmettiana.
Later we added:
Tepeztate, Weber Azul, EspadĂn, Mexicana, TobalĂĄ, Karwinskii, and Murpheyi.
After several years of observation, a few clear standouts are emerging. The varieties showing the strongest performance, and the ones we plan to continue expanding acreage with, are Yolo, EspadĂn, and Blue Weber.
Why these three?
đ” Yolo: Our 5-year-old plants averaged about 200 lbs with brix over 40. Weâve been very impressed with their vigor and hardiness. Even winter in the valley hasnât slowed them down, which is a huge plus.
đ” EspadĂn: A hardy and adaptable mezcal variety known for dependable yields and versatility across warm climates. It has been growing very well here.
đ” Blue Weber: The most widely recognized agave due to its use in tequila, giving it strong market demand and long-term crop value. Of the three, it has proven to be the most temperamental to cultivate. Even so, because it is such a popular variety, we are continuing to plant it.
One of the biggest lessons from this trial is just how differently agave varieties behave in the same field. Some varieties grow slowly and struggle with seasonal temperature shifts, while others show vigorous growth and strong resilience under the exact same conditions.

As we continue learning how agave behaves in Californiaâs soils and climate, trials like this help guide where and what we plant next.

Innovation starts with getting your boots dirty.
We hosted seven seniors from Cal Polyâs BioResource & Agricultural Engineering Department BRAE who are designing and building an automated harvester for Woolf Agave as their senior project.
After modeling the machine in CAD, theyâre now modifying a grape harvester to remove agave leaves and lift the piña from the ground â work that could significantly reduce the physical strain of harvest crews.
Seeing the crop up close â and trying their hand at harvesting â showed them exactly why this machine is needed.
This is Learn by Doing at its best, and exactly the kind of innovation that will help position California as a global leader in agave production!
