A child asks close to 300 questions a day. By age 10, that number has quietly fallen to a fraction of what it used to be.

Nothing happened to the curiosity itself. What changes is what happens after each question leaves a child's mouth. A few hurried answers, a few distracted nods, and a child learns the question isn't worth finishing next time. Not because anyone meant to teach that lesson. Busy days rarely announce themselves as the moment something quietly stopped.

Every question is really a small request to be taken seriously. The jar does not empty on its own, and it does not stay full on its own either.

We ask "how was your day?" and get "fine." Every time.
But ask "what was the best part of today?" and something shifts.

They have to go back and look. Pick a favorite. And suddenly you get the real answer - the worm on the sidewalk, the kid who shared their snack, the part where they jumped really high. The question is the whole trick.

If your 4-year-old just told you a bald-faced lie, breathe. It's right on schedule.
Around this age, kids figure out you can't actually read their mind — and the very first thing they do with that discovery is test it. Usually badly. Usually with evidence smeared across their face.
It's not the start of a problem. It's the start of them understanding other people have a separate inner world.

Their brain is running hotter than yours right now. Around age 5, it's burning energy at roughly double an adult's rate.
Which reframes a few things. The bottomless snacking. The total meltdown at 5pm. The way they crash into sleep mid-sentence. That's not them being dramatic — it's a brain doing enormous construction work and running the body's tank low to do it.
So when they seem "tired for no reason," there's a reason. The hardest job in the house is happening behind those eyes.
