What a lovely Sunday afternoon at Deep Gap! We talked with dozens of people who were eighty-five miles into their hike about how their gear is holding up, how they cook during the burn ban, how they protect bears & their supplies from each other...
We shared some comfort food- homemade soup and grilled cheeses & fresh fruit- one hiker said, when we saw them in town two days later, "I'd been sick that day, and the food you guys provided was the only thing I was able to eat and enjoy- I can't thank you enough!"
So glad to be a part of these hopeful thru-hikers journey through Macon County.

Our 2026 A.T. Thru-Hiker Welcome Banner is now up on the Town Square, ready to greet the thousands of hikers making their way north each spring. Each year, hikers stop by to sign the banner as they pass through town — leaving their trail names and a small piece of their journey behind.

By the end of the season, this banner will be filled with signatures from hikers chasing Katahdin, representing miles walked, friendships made, and adventures still ahead.

If you're hiking through AT Mile 110, we hope you’ll stop in, enjoy our town, and leave your mark on the banner! Welcome to Franklin, and happy trails. 🌄

Pssst...hey hikers we have some awesome news! 💚

As you make your way north toward AT Mile 110, we’re excited to share something special this season. For the first year ever, the Macon County Transit has partnered with local businesses to offer FREE shuttle service into our wonderful town.

Franklin has always loved welcoming hikers, and this is one more way we can help you rest, refuel, and enjoy a little trail town magic before heading back out.

Macon County Transit will be picking up at Rock Gap and Winding Stair Gap daily (M-F), and bringing hikers right into Franklin where everything you need is close by — great food, coffee, lodging, outfitters, medical care, and a friendly community that truly loves the trail.

Whether you need a hot meal, a shower, new gear, or just a place to relax for a bit, we hope you’ll hop on the shuttle and spend some time with us. We can’t wait to welcome you to Franklin!
