This is the discussion I want to have! So when I suggested that families get their cats fixed, I was thrilled when a student asked this very reasonable question.

My answer: "You could. But if everybody does that, then there are going to be too many kittens and not enough people to take them. And when those kittens have kittens, it's going to get worse. That's why we ask families to fix their pets, so we don't end up with stray cats all over the place."

It's a serious conversation - but kids are interested and open to talking about it. We're not pushy or judgy - but we do give them our reasons! This discussion is made easier with our story Two Frisky Kittens, illustrated by Zoe Saunders of Whimsicolour Art. The link is in the comments and we hope you will have these conversations in your town, too!

Episode drop, and this one is short but important! One of the hardest conversations is about how to keep dogs from wandering off. Just when you thought everyone had a fenced in yard... you travel all over Tennessee and realize... they don't! How can we have this conversation with kids? Subscribe to We’re Talking Pets with Robin! Link is in the comments.

One of the best things about talking to kids are the questions you'll get! We don't always know the answers and sometimes we have to "do our research." We now know that raw juice from a cactus can cause GI upset for dogs. There are some answers we know, and other answers we know, but we debate the best way to answer! Talking to kids will keep you young at heart and bring a lot of joy into your life! They appreciate the time you spend with them!

On Thursday, we spoke to 700 students in Simpson County, Kentucky, because kids in the Bluegrass State also need to learn responsible pet care! Many thanks to Simpson Elementary School for hosting Robin, and it was fun to have animal shelter representatives from Simpson County and Butler County, KY come to observe.

It was great to be back at Charlotte Elementary School in Dickson County today! We spoke to 500 students from Kindergarten through 5th grade on various aspects of responsible pet ownership. We had them up and moving, doing role play, and if you look closely - you'll see a sneak peak of our newest book on the horizon!

Despite our best efforts, sometimes cats just sneak away, don't they! Remember, the chances are good, they haven't gone very far. Here are the steps you can take to help get your cat back home.
1. Check hiding spots like crawl spaces, your garage, and even under the hood of your vehicle. Give a honk!
2. Talk to neighbors - ask them to check those hiding spaces in their home as well.
3. A well-placed Lost Cat sign in your neighborhood where all traffic comes and goes will really help.
4. Put out some dirty laundry - cats have a good sense of smell and will identify YOUR scent. We don't recommend a litter box because that can attract predators and cause its own problems.
5. File a lost cat report with your shelter. In Maury Co you can do that on-line, and there's also the Petco Love lost pet database.

If these cats shown here look familiar, Melon and Tupac were both adopted from Maury County Animal Services! Love the artwork? Stay tuned for more info our newest book, Kitty Do's and Don't as Told by Tiger the Tabby.

Episode drop! And this one is personal! We went to Maury County Animal Services and talked to their director about all the things MCAS does for their community. What's extra special is how much progress this shelter has made in the past 10 years. Now it is a thriving organization that does so much for the animals and people of Maury County! We learned a lot from Director Kim Raffauf, and fun fact - is Barney the Dog came from this very shelter!

⭐Meet the illustrator, Part 2⭐

We have gotten so many compliments and questions about "Who is doing your artwork?" Zoe Saunders of Whimsicolour Art illustrated a whopping SIX books for us, so please read more!

1. Hi Zoe! Can you describe your style of illustration?

I’d describe my style as timeless and traditional. The style is simple pencil lines and watercolour, reminiscent of many of the illustrators who I used to admire as a child (Quentin Blake, Anita Jeram, Helen Oxenbury).

2. You are also an author! Tell us about a favorite book you wrote!

Oh, this is a tough one! I have such little time to write and illustrate my own books, that they are all very special to me.

I have to say my book ‘How to Make a Wish’ would probably be my favorite. It’s the very first picture book I wrote, after overcoming infertility and finally having a little one to write a story for. So many other people have said that it resonates with their own journey to parenthood too, which is really lovely.

3. You have worked with many authors. What is your recipe for having a successful partnership when creating a book?

I never forget to appreciate what a privilege it is to have an author choose me to work on their book. I know that writing their story has been a labour of love, and it is often very personal to them, too. So it’s important that I try to understand what their vision is, and tune into it when I draw.

From Robin: This was such a fun collaboration, and I always felt like our stories were in good hands with Zoe. It also helps that she loves animals just like we do!

🐾 First visit of the 2026-2027 school year!
🐾 First visit to Marshall County!
We spoke to 400 students at Marshall Elementary School! And with this heat wave, it sure was a good week to teach kids that dogs and cats need shelter in all kinds of weather!

Presentation based on Robin’s book, “Dogs Need Shelter, Yes They Do!”

This is a nationwide database that uses AI photo-matching technology to match your dog or cat with animals at local shelters near your zip code. With all the debate about AI, let's celebrate the good here!

In addition, you should:
- Call your local shelter or enter a lost dog/cat form.
- Talk to your neighbors and tell them to BOLO!
- Hang a sign with your pets photo and your phone number in your neighborhood.
- Put something with a familiar scent like your dirty clothes on the porch.
- Notify your microchip company.
- Let's get missing pets back home!
