Inhabits and Inhibits

I searched the word "praise" in the NIV which produced 363 references, suggesting there exists a “praise phrase” for every day of the year (given you repeat two, which—of itself—is not a bad idea). Psalm 150 is my favorite:

"Praise the Lord.

Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe,
praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord."

As I have spent time studying the power of praise, I believe strongly that it is one of our greatest weapons of spiritual warfare—a power tool the Lord has bestowed unto us in order to both glorify Him and defeat the enemy.

"But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel." (Ps. 22:3, KJV)

"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." (2 Cor. 10:3-5. NKJV)

The devil delights in kicking you when you are down, and this is the time when you least feel like praising God. Do it anyway! Do it by faith. This is your sacrifice of praise (Heb. 13:15), and it defeats the enemy.

"Through the praise of children and infants [out of the mouth of babes] you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger." (Ps. 8:2)

1. Praise invites the power and presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit of God.
2. Praise silences and wards off the great accuser and his minions (demon repellant).

Praise inhabits and inhibits. What a beautiful, amazing gift and weapon we possess!

Behold and Be Held

David—a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14)—knew this truth very well. Life is not a bowl of cherries. He spent many days in lament.

"How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, and my enemy will say, 'I have overcome him,' and my foes will rejoice when I fall. But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me." (Ps. 13)

During times of grief, loss, betrayal, darkness, suffering, it is good to spend time in lament before the Lord. But don’t despair. This is a time of pruning for the future crop to manifest. Fruit doesn’t grow on the mountaintops—it grows in the valleys. When your valleys come, like David, enter God’s presence, laying yourself before Him, resting in His empowering grace, trusting Him to finish the work in you that He started from your beginning. Rest. Behold and be held.

"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Phil. 1:6)

"Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…." (Heb. 12:2, NKJV)

Sometimes you get cherries, and sometimes you labor and toil and suffer and sweat while awaiting God’s merciful rain in the middle of your drought in order for the cherries to blossom and produce the enjoyable, lovely bushel of fruit.

Give Him your weakness and He’ll give you His strength.

"May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and HE WILL DO IT." (1 Thess. 5:23-24)

Elusive Emotions (Part 3)

Your feelings are real, but they are not always right! Do your emotions delegate to you, or do you delegate to your emotions? Are you in agreement with the unpredictable nature of your flesh, or are you in agreement with unshakable stability in Christ?

Your body’s physical needs and desires, as well as your mind, thoughts, wants, and emotions are strongly associated with one another. This constitutes the fleshly or carnal nature. The flesh is complex and multifaceted, which is why it is so difficult to control. Those flesh-versus-spirit scriptures, such as found in Romans 8 and Galatians 5, are understood much more clearly when viewed with this perspective.

Two highly effective ways to take charge of your emotions:

1. Subject your flesh to God’s Word. Emotions may be present, but they are not always true. What IS true—and always true? “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). Our mind, will, and emotions are reconciled to the truth by the power of the Word, instead of their taking over and ruling our behaviors based on self. Speak what’s true despite emotion, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). This is activating the Word in your daily life!

2. Remember that your mind, will, and emotions are strongly influenced by physical factors. If the body gets hungry, sick, fatigued or cold, it is easier to become irritable or emotional. Respect your body as God’s holy temple (1 Cor. 6:19-20) and take care of it. Doing so will help your spirit keep your flesh in check.

When you walk by faith, you cannot afford to be governed by how you feel! Choose. Feed the spirit and subdue the flesh.

Love dare: For 30 days, walk the high road in ruling over your emotions rather than letting them rule you. …Expect “abundant life” results!

Elusive Emotions (Part 2)

My mother-in-law labeled it me-itis. Our selfish nature and the world persuade us to serve how we feel. In our modern society, not only do we cater to our emotions and feel justified in doing so, we publicly declare them to the world on social media where our words are discoverable forever. Our social media “friends” (at times an oxymoron) uphold our stance, further enabling our egocentric proclamations. The ONLY outcome of this cycle is destruction... and then we wonder why we have such unhappiness and strife in our relationships! In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit manifests kindness, gentleness, self-control…and some things are just better left unsaid (or unposted). (See Gal. 5:22-23.)

Experiencing emotions is part of God’s design for us. God, Himself, is an emotional being; likewise, we are created in His image. Emotions allow us the unique opportunity to share the wonder, the pain, and the awe of existence. Sadness has its place. Tears—whether from grief or joy—have their place. Anger has its place. Exuberance has its place. But we simply cannot allow our emotions to rule over us. They are traits, not tyrants. Christ is the only Master. Take anger, for example: Anger is a normal, healthy, human emotion. It’s okay to have it! Jesus never sinned yet He got angry. It’s what you do with your anger that matters…. “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold” (Eph. 4:26-27).

I had to come to a place where I actually revolted against the sways of my flesh and the negative influences of other people, and then—by God’s grace—I could decide to respond to every person and every situation in a positive manner. I didn’t say I get it right all the time, but I am fully aware each time that I have this choice to make. To respond rather than react. By the way, you cannot do this yourself by sheer might and determination: “It is not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty” (Zech. 4:6). Need Him, be with Him, and He will empower you.

Remember: Your feelings are real, but they are not always right! Entrust them to the One who is trustworthy.

Elusive Emotions (Part 1)

We’re hungry, so we sell our birthright for a bowl of porridge; we become irritable, so we bark hurtful words; our mindset becomes askew, so we let our emotions rule our behaviors; we become self-focused, so all we can see is our own viewpoint; we become prideful, so we defy God’s instruction and choose our own will over His.

The desires of the body or reactions of the soul become the urgent, and we allow them to take priority over the important, the permanent, the eternal. These are the things of the flesh. Our flesh is loud; it wants full attention. Its tendency, if left to its own, is to overtake the throne of our thoughts and behaviors.

You may say, “But I can’t help it. That’s just the way I am!” or “That’s just how I feel!” One of Satan’s greatest lies is that we must behave consistently with our feelings in order to be true to self. He wants us to feel like we are dishonest if we act differently than we feel. A lie! Well, you may not be able to control the fact that you have a feeling, but you either choose to give place to your feelings, or you choose to give place to the Spirit of Christ in you. And when you do the things that are in agreement with the Word and the Holy Spirit and get some right-thinking going, then your emotions and feelings will eventually align and follow along.

Three facts about feelings:
1. Feelings are real; they are not always right! …Don’t trust them.
2. Feelings are a bit like an unruly child: If you cater to them, they will take over the entire household!
3. Emotions and feelings are unpredictable, but committing to walk/act in love/forgiveness is an anchor that the Lord gives us in the storm of emotions.

The Altar Alternative

In Philippians 1:20, Paul prays that Christ be exalted in his body, whether it lives or dies. Exaltation is not a function exclusive to our spirits. We can glorify Christ in our physical bodies!

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship." (Rom. 12:1, NIV)

A living sacrifice can crawl off the altar at any time. This is why God asks you to offer or to present yourself as a living sacrifice; it’s voluntary. Your choice. Laying down your life daily is a spiritual act, an act of worship, and this is pleasing to your Father.

God is the God of paradoxes, isn’t He? Just think about it. Feeding a hungry enemy heaps fiery coals on his head. The weak are made strong. He who is last becomes first. He who gives receives. And the one who loses his life will save it. An amazing, paradoxical, unequal, and unfair exchange transpires when you crawl onto the altar: God infuses His very own Spirit within you, giving you greater life than before you surrendered. Not only spiritual life eternally, but also mortal life, here and now!

"And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you." (Rom. 8:11, NIV)

Does this actually mean that the very same power that resurrected the Savior resides inside my mortal body? Precisely! So then why is mankind always in search of the “fountain of youth,” and why are the medical, cosmetic, and health and fitness industries profiting billions by promising longer life and youthful appearance? We have the answer right here!

"For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light." (Ps 36:9, NIV)

"Treat your body like a temple, not a woodshed. …Your body needs to be a good support system for the mind and spirit. If you take good care of it, your body can take you wherever you want to go, with the power and strength and energy and vitality you will need to get there" (Jim Rohn).

Praying and Saying

"I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips." (Ps. 34:1)

Our Holy Creator formed the universe with words spoken. He created us in His image, granting us great power in our spoken words also. “The tongue has the power of life and death” (Prov. 18:21).

Jesus teaches we’ll be held accountable for every word, good or bad (Matt. 12:36-37). The accountability for words is not just a social matter but deeply spiritual. Words expose the true heart of a person (Luke 6:45).

Are we saying what we’re praying? Seems like when we are talking with God, our posture and tone vary from that while speaking to others or self. In one breath we pray for financial blessing, then in another we say, “I’ll never get out of debt!” You pray diligently for your spouse and then say, “He/she will never change!” We pray that we believe God for His blessing or healing, and then we say, “I’m afraid God won’t answer my prayer.”

When we pray in agreement with God’s Word, we proclaim and claim His promises; and then we turn around and whine about the very thing we just prayed about. We negate our proclaiming by our complaining. How do you think God feels about this?

Because we already possess “EVERY spiritual blessing in Christ” (Eph. 1:3), we should have absolutely no reason whatsoever to ever complain or grumble about anything! Does your phrase agree with your praise? What is coming out your mouth?

"Do everything without complaining and arguing." (Phil. 2:14, NLT)

News flash: EVERYTHING means EVERYTHING!

Are you claiming to be Christian yet speaking no differently than the world? As a follower of Jesus, you believe wholeheartedly that He has eternally saved your soul, but is your mouth saved? His blood paid full price for our salvation, but we need Holy Spirit’s help to align our tongue to His will. So, ask.

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thess. 5:16-18)

News flash: ALL means ALL! It doesn’t mean easy, but it does mean business.

God gives us many commands with promises attached; but one of my favorites, proven time and time again:

"Rejoice in the Lord ALWAYS. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious [worry] about anything, but in EVERY situation, by prayer and petition, with THANKSGIVING, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:4-7)

I confess, I am deeply convicted by this study that complaining is absolutely a sin against God. Lord, help me to fully surrender my mouth unto You.

"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." (Ps. 19:14, NLT)

No Shame!

It jumped right off the page of my Bible. I have read this verse—actually, one of my favorites—hundreds of times, but two words captured me today.

"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Heb. 12:2)

Scorned shame.

Why? For the joy set before Him. And what, pray, does that mean? You. It means you. His aim was intently set in redeeming you so that He has eternity to spend together with you. There was no other way, and He knew it. Anticipating with hope the joy ahead enabled Him to endure the stripping, the flogging, the spit, the nails, the mocking, the cross. In becoming the spotless sacrifice for sin, once and for all, He knew what He was purchasing: the treasure of His life, you. You were the joy set before Him.

"God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." (Col. 2:13b-15)

Initially it appeared as if He were the one being shamed. Even though at any instant He could have deployed 10,000 angels, He submitted to the cross. In doing so, He scorned shame itself. He defied death, renounced ridicule, incapacitated powers, and castigated guilt. Their authority over you has been rendered impotent.

"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Rom. 8:37-39)

The tables have turned. Now He is the joy set before you. Look at the very next verse in Hebrews 12: “Consider [focus on] him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (v. 3).

Jesus—the One who scorned shame—has declared you shame-free. He already paid that price, and no debt remains. You are free, indeed.

Shameless

Shame is a burdensome, quiet, insidious companion—one that tells us our past defines us, that God’s grace has limits, that we must carry our failures through life like a bag of bricks. It’s the voice that says “You should be ashamed of yourself! ...and remain ashamed of yourself.” …A nagging whisper that we must pay penance for our sin…for the rest of our life. Shame hangs over us like a dark cloud, following us wherever we go. It’s so heavy on our soul that we’re certain people can see it on our face. “If they only knew, they’d reject and abandon me.”

The gospel says otherwise: In Christ our identity is redefined. He doesn’t merely cover and forgive our sin; He removes it, separates it from us, and literally erases it.

"[That which] condemned us, he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross." (Col 2:14b)

"For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." (Ps. 103:11-12)

So why in this world would we choose to continue living under something that is nonexistent? (It IS a choice, you know.) Did we receive God’s grace and forgiveness or did we not?

He refuses to let shame define you! Are you doing the same?

"Therefore, there is now [right now] no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death." (Rom. 8:1-2)

This is not a call to forget the lessons of our past, but to stop letting past sin be the lens through which we view ourselves.

Shame re-accuses and condemns. Grace refutes shame by declaring the truth aloud. When shame comes knocking, answer with Scripture: “I am forgiven, I am loved, I am a new creation in Christ. No shame! No shame! Shame is not allowed here! I am shame-less and free!”

A prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for removing my sin and all of my shame. Help me to live fully in the freedom and joy You purchased, to believe and receive Your complete redemption, and to walk forward as one whose identity is who You say I am. So be it, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Your Part

In the Bible, how many times did God miraculously part foreboding waters for His people to cross over safely on dry ground?

Not once, not twice, not even thrice, but four times!

1. The Red Sea (Exodus 14): Moses raises his staff while the people stand still; God drives back the sea with a strong east wind; they pass through on dry ground; and God destroys their vicious pursuers. A doorway from bo***ge into freedom, showing that God’s power can overturn the very thing that appears insurmountable.

2. The Jordan River (at flood stage, Joshua 3): The priests bearing the Ark step into the overflow (NOT standing still, this time the first action is a step of faith), and THEN the waters stop; and the people cross into the Promised Land on dry ground. A border-crossing that seals a long-awaited covenant promise and confirms God’s faithfulness.

3. Elijah at the Jordan (2 Kings 2:8): Elijah parts the waters with his cloak, crossing with Elisha, his God-anointed protege. A symbol of prophetic transition—one generation inspiring and handing off divine leadership to the next—and God’s constant faithfulness.

4. Elisha at the Jordan (2 Kings 2:14): With his mentor Elijah now gone, Elisha repeats the miracle, striking the waters with Elijah’s cloak, and crossing back over alone and into his ministry. A reaffirmation that God’s power remains at work through the next willing servant.

Press into the truth that God’s power is not only displayed in ancient stories. They’re patterns of God meeting His people at the edge of impossibility—delivering, guiding, and reaffirming His presence, demonstrating His mastery over creation and His commitment to His beloved. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and He longs for you to trust Him to make a way where there seems to be no way.

Where you stand today, what water blocks your path? What promise might be waiting on the far shore if you trust Jehovah enough to step forward?

He is always and forever the God of His Word. Hear His invitation to trust Him again.
