Today we celebrate Andy Johns on his birthday by honoring a coaching legacy that helped define excellence across generations of Indiana high school football. Inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame on June 18, 2003 in Fort Wayne (Region 3), Johns was recognized for his extraordinary career at Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, where he served as a cornerstone of the program for decades. While he is still living today, this moment serves as a celebration of the lifelong impact he has already made on the game, his players, and his community.
A Fort Wayne Central Catholic graduate (1966), Johns continued his education at St. Joseph’s College and the University of St. Francis, where he also earned his master’s degree and was later inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame. His coaching journey at Bishop Dwenger began in 1973 as a freshman football coach, followed by roles as junior varsity assistant and varsity assistant before becoming head coach in 1980. From 1980 through 2002, he led the program to remarkable sustained success, compiling a career record of 191–67, a winning percentage of .740, while also contributing as a coach in basketball, wrestling, and baseball.
Under his leadership, Bishop Dwenger became one of Indiana’s premier programs. His teams captured five SAC titles (1983, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1996), reached the pinnacle of the state with IHSAA State Championships in 1983, 1990, and 1991, and finished as State Runner-Up in 1996 with a 12–2 record. His excellence on the sidelines earned him SAC Coach of the Year honors three times, along with recognition for milestone victories from the Indiana Football Coaches Association for both his 100th and 150th career wins.
Beyond the wins and championships, Johns’ legacy is also reflected in the athletes he helped shape and guide, including Jason Fabin, Chris Dittoe, Tom Dixon, Kevin Caretta, Euel Wilson, and Alex Tone—players who went on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels. Since 1990, he has also served as Bishop Dwenger’s athletic director, continuing his lifelong commitment to building strong athletic programs. Supported by his wife Kathy and their children Amy, Meghan, and Mark, his career stands as a lasting testament to leadership, consistency, and the enduring influence of a coach who helped define an era of Indiana football excellence.
