Welcome new followers. Today I wanted to talk about Wagner's use of brass. One of the most exciting, or profound pieces of music ever written is "Hagen's Call" in the Ring Cycle. It is on YouTube, several versions. Imo, you will hear the voice of evil, Hagen's, like you've never heard it before. A menacing, abhorrent sound of betrayal and death, you will hear the Tuba playing as it should be played, with power and might. And you will hear the sound of an ancient horn, culminating in a blast of dissonant horror. It is the absolute horror that Hagen brings.

My favorite composer for brass is of course, Richard Wagner. Lately I've been listening to the Ring Cycle, "Der Ring des Nibelungen." Masterpieces like, "Hagen's Call" and so many other special moments, thrilling and overwhelming, frightening, and exhausting. Hearing the brass rage like thunder is so magnificent. But there are other composers who have captured greatness and used such bold brass, such as one of my favorites, Modest Mussorgsky's, "Pictures at an Exhibition."
Giving full value to a time increment is key to sonority. Phrasing is also crucial.
For me, the ultimate brass performance is, but not limited to, playing Richard Wagner.
I do miss playing in a good Army Band. Sousa, King, Wagner, Beethoven, Rogers and Hammerstein, Bernstein, Shostakovich, the big concerts were euphoric.
My trumpet student can now double tongue. He is very musical and talented. He's building up his endurance after a long time away. Very proud of him.
Had nice meeting and lesson for my re-emerging trumpet player. Double tonguing will be first big skill for him to embrace.
Starting with a trumpet player next week. Looking forward to the new project.
Getting deeper into Wagner's Ring Cycle. The story is profound, the music magnificent. Playing Wagner is a euphoric, overwhelming experience. Ecstasy.
My Naples Tuba student has chosen to Minor in Music. He has intensified his practice and making excellent progress. What a difference from last year. Proud.
