My daughter competed, for the very first time, in the biggest Jiu-Jitsu event in the world: the IBJJF World Championship as a blue belt.
Even after dedicating my entire life to Jiu-Jitsu, I thought I was prepared for this moment. But the adrenaline of standing on the outside, being both a coach and a father at the same time, is simply indescribable.
I truly have no words to describe how proud and happy I am. Sometimes I feel like she does this even more for me than for herself. Kyla shares the same love for Jiu-Jitsu that I have, but she has always struggled with controlling her emotions before competitions — and I know how difficult that can be for her.
But as both a coach and a father, I also know how important it is to learn how to deal with those emotions. Learning to control emotions, stay focused, and overcome anxiety is a life lesson — not just something for the mats.
Today, I watched my little girl compete in her first World Championship like a giant. She fought 3 matches, winning the first two by submission and losing the final by referees’ decision in a very tough match, tied 1–1 on advantages.
She had an almost flawless World Championship run, without giving up a single point. In the end, we came so close. It wasn’t the ending she wanted, nor the one this coach and father had hoped for.
But I’m going home incredibly proud of the young woman she is becoming — overcoming anxiety, facing insecurities, and showing tremendous strength.
This time, the gold medal didn’t come, but I’m bringing home something even greater: immense pride in my little girl.
I love you, daughter ❤️🙏

Today, Taber put on one of his best performances at the highest level of competition in the world — the IBJJF World Championship.
After three incredible wins against very tough opponents, he lost a very close semifinal match by referee decision after a hard-fought 2–2 battle. A decision I personally didn’t agree with, but that’s part of the game.
Today was special for me. Having both him and my daughter competing on the same day brought back great memories of my own journey in this sport.
I saw this kid walk into my gym a little over a year ago with a dream — to become a champion. After teaching Jiu-Jitsu for over 30 years, you learn to recognize when someone has something different.
I saw a true love for Jiu-Jitsu in this kid — not just someone chasing a gold medal. The commitment alone spoke volumes. Driving 1 hour and 30 minutes every single day to train at my gym made me want to give my very best to help him achieve his dream.
I told him from day one: “Focus and patience. We have a lot to work on.”
Only two months after joining the gym, he fought both the Pan Ams and Worlds and lost his first match in both. But what impressed me most wasn’t the losses — it was his attitude afterward.
This kid is a man of very few words 😂 I think I got maybe 10 words out of him in the last 15 months.
But today, his posture, confidence, and attitude at the World Championship showed everyone that he is no longer the same kid who walked into the gym a year ago. He is becoming a true athlete and a strong young man.
Winning a bronze medal at the World Championship against one of the toughest brackets in the world showed that you are not just another name in the bracket — you are here to take your place.
Taber, I’m very proud of you. Hard work is paying off. Stay focused and patient — you are on the right path.
Congratulations on your World Championship bronze medal 🥉
Now welcome to the elite athlete life… harder training starts now 😂
