Today we locked in on fundamental ball handling, adding pivots and combos to get their minds/bodies working not just their hands.
Also introduced playing with their back to the basket, a skill most young players skip but it builds real footwork, balance, and toughness.
Drop steps, using the body, finishing through contact all habits that will separate them down the line.

Today’s focus: Catch, Rip, and Attack with Control 🧠🏀
In this workout, we focused on making strong, smart moves right off the catch. Here’s exactly what we were teaching and why it matters:

Too many players waste time after catching the ball. A quick, controlled rip forces defenders to react and opens up opportunities without needing 5-6 dribbles. This is how elite players create space and make plays efficiently while keeping the defense off balance now they have to play your drive and if you’re a good shooter it’s very difficult to guard because they have to respect your jump shot.

1. Be Ready Before the Catch
Your feet should be set, knees bent, and hands up so you can go immediately. We call this shot-ready position. If you’re not ready, you’ve already lost time.

2. Read the Defender as You Catch
Is the defender closing out fast? Are they off-balance? Are they on your top foot? You need to see this instantly so you can make the right decision shoot, shot fake , rip, jab/ go, or pass. The higher level you get the less dribbles you will get it’s about being efficient.There’s a lot of options you have off a good rip you keep the defense on their toes.

3. Stay Under Control
A fast first step means nothing if you’re out of control. We worked on keeping our head up, shoulders forward, and taking tight angles to the basket or into our next move (floaters, pull-ups, or finishes).

4. Rip Low and Explode
The rip is a low and strong sweep of the ball across your body (hip to hip), keeping it protected while you explode past the defender’s lead foot. Quick first step off rip is a very efficient move and very deadly.
✔ Stay low
✔ Push off your back foot
✔ Cover ground with your first step

📈 Mastering this helps you score more, get more assists, and become a real problem on the court.

Today, we locked in on shooting off the catch focusing on footwork, balance, shot prep, and quick release. Repping game-speed actions that translate directly to what he’ll see at the college level.

Catch & shoot is one of the most underrated but vital skills in today’s game.

With the pace and space era of basketball, defenses are constantly rotating and recovering which means the windows to shoot are shorter than ever. Players who can consistently catch in rhythm and get their shot off quickly without sacrificing form become instant offensive threats.

🧠:

1. Pace = Control
Changing speeds is not just playing fast it can separate you from an average guard to elite guard
When you control the pace, you control your defender. Instead of being sped up from pressure or excitement.

2. Breaking Down the Defense = Creating Offense
Once you break your defender, the defense will have to help if not you’ll have layups. This will force defenses to help and a lot of times rotations are when mistakes happens
That’s where assists and open looks come from. As a guard you are not just creating for self but for your teammates. PUT PRESSURE ON THE DEFENSE AT ALL TIMES.

3. Finishing Through Contact = Completing the Play
Finishing through contact is a major 🔑 when attacking Help defenders will rotate. Bigs will bump you. If you can’t finish through the contact and play physical, you’re just wasting drives and possessions
Finishing through contact earns buckets, free throws, respect and going back to putting pressure on the defense. It makes the defense think twice next time nobody wants to get 2/3 fouls early “ATTACK”
