Presuming competence is the foundation of every spelling session. We approach each student with the belief that they are capable of learning, thinking, understanding, and communicating, even if their body makes it difficult to consistently show what they know. Rather than lowering expectations because of motor challenges or unreliable speech, we provide the support, time, and regulation strategies they need to access communication.
Throughout each lesson, we speak to our spellers in an age-appropriate way, ask meaningful questions, and offer opportunities to share their thoughts, opinions, humor, and personality. We don't assume that inconsistent responses reflect a lack of understanding. Instead, we look at what may be interfering—motor planning, regulation, attention, or sensory challenges—and adjust my coaching to help the body become more coordinated with the mind.
Presuming competence doesn't mean assuming every response is accurate or that communication is effortless. It means giving each speller the respect, support, and opportunity to demonstrate what they know while recognizing that reliable communication is a skill that develops with consistent practice. Our goal is to help every speller build the motor skills and confidence needed to communicate as independently and accurately as possible. 💙
