Do you rotate your children’s toys?
Some Montessori schools rotate their lessons according to some holidays and seasons. It can be very exciting for young children to work the same skills but with different colors, items, and patterns. It’s an invitation to reinforce skills and add more fun to daily routines.
This month has been all about pink, red, purple, and lavender colors!! ♥️💜💕
All lessons shown are in the Practical life area and for fine motor, early language and math skills development.
💜 heart shape hole punching
💜 Pom-Pom transfer
💜 same color sorting
💜 painting with a roller

Do you know what OCCI stands for?
✅ Order
✅ Coordination
✅ Control
✅ Independence
All Montessori materials focus on OCCI. The prepared environment of a Montessori classroom provides this development in young children. The process is a partnership between the Directress and the child who watches closely as he or she is presented each lesson. From taking them from the shelf, working with them without interruption to absorb its purpose, to returning them to its respective place.
It is a full cycle of work which reinforces children to acquire not only OCCI but a sense of joy and accomplishment.

Are you familiar with the Russian Nesting Dolls?
These fabulous wood dolls are often found in Montessori classrooms. They have very unique colors, patterns, and they vary in sizes. Young children are very attracted to them!
You may be wondering the benefit behind this unique piece. 🤔
Well, for starters they promote language and vocabulary skills. It provides children with an opportunity to ask questions, describe what they see and do, and learn about a different culture!
They promote promote cognitive skills. The different sizes of the dolls reinforce critical thinking and hand eye coordination since they fit in only one particular way. It’s like putting a puzzle together!
They promote fine motor skills. By taking the dolls apart and placing them back together young children are making their hands stronger and indirectly preparing them for future hand writing skills!
They promote cultural knowledge awareness. Matryoshka dolls represent a mother figure carrying her child and her family legacy within her womb. What a wonderful way to introduce young children to honor their mothers!
Aren’t these dolls a great learning activity for little ones?

Young children need time to adapt to new environments. Being part of a school environment is very beneficial for them as they are able to build upon their prior knowledge and improve on all of their developmental skills.
Through the prepared environment young children will have the opportunity to build a strong foundation which they will carry with them throughout their lives.
As Dr. Maria Montessori writes, “The child has a different relation to his environment from ours… the child absorbs it. The things he sees are not just remembered; they form part of his soul. He incarnates in himself all in the world about him that his eyes see and his ears hear.” (The Absorbent Mind)

How is sorting beneficial to young children?
Sorting is a cross over skill. That means it can be used in different learning areas such as reading, math, writing, and science. 📚➕📝🪐
Sorting promotes executive function skills development in young children. This is an important brain skill which helps build memory, attention, and problem-solving.
Sorting helps children:
✅ categorize information
✅ analyze data
✅ look at differences and similarities
Children as young as 19 months can start sorting. Reinforce sorting daily by using various colors, shapes, sizes, types, textures, styles, sounds, and even smells!
Use age appropriate approach for younger children, like only using one attribute. (“Show me the things that are red”) Then two or more attributes as they have mastered the previous activities. (“Show me the things that are big and yellow”)
