This is a very special song for me because I had the opportunity of performing it on stage with my dear darling sister forever miss Florida 1976 the one and only and forever flawless Dana Manchester. One night we were doing this at club 21 just before I was Australia and do a show we were going to call “LA CAGE DOWN UNDER", but just before we were going to leave sometime within the next few days, I got a phone call from Bic Carrol who was going to be the director choreographer of the show, and he gave me the sad news that one of my dearest friends ever, the legendary Michael St Laurent had entered immortality. I was so sad! I think I said S**T or something like that when I heard about that on the phone! The first time I met Michael St Laurent was when he came to see me in concert I was doing probably an hour and a half show on stage and the audience was phenomenal I must say and mind you I was Green! I was brand new in the business, of course I had been in theater and had theater training but as a female impersonator I was a newbie, and after the show who should come back to congratulate me but Michael St Laurent who was one of the legends that I had always admired and I think of him every time I watch the Rose when he comes on singing The fire down below with Bette Midler dressed as Mae West. He was really something and there's another one that really mentored me and helped me along I'll never forget meeting him that first night and he said let me tell you something kid, you're good. I mean you are really good! And that having been said, I believe I can make you even better. Well I was over the moon with this it was just too much Michael St Laurent was going to make me better take me I'm yours right? Anyway, Michael and I perform together and we became great really great friends he became a friend who is very close to me and always there for me and I knew something was wrong in the last 2 years of his life but Michael was a very private person that kept a lot hid, even from his close friends and roommates because one night I had asked Stacy Carlson who was living with Michael then as well as Ernie Michaels who was living with Michael and they had both concurred that there was nothing wrong with Michael and he was just a drama queen. Well, Michael I just wish you had had a grand burial, with a funeral like the one in the motion picture Mike Nichols "ANGELS IN AMERICA: PERESTROIKA" with the full Gospel choir and the 20 professional mourners and the black carriage that pulls the body with six white horses and the drag queen inside the service singing I'M HIS CHILD. Michael really deserved that kind of a send-off but, here we were now already to fly halfway across the globe to Australia to do a show that Michael St Laurent was under contract to MC and I'm sure he would have been the greatest MC ever but, as always and, as the last word, God had other plans. So, thank God for B who said just wait, he and Lou Paciocca, the owner of of the original "AN EVENING AT LA CAGE"supper club out in West Hollywood California, and Bic was his choreographer and customer and had been in the entertainment industry for what the french would say a certain amount of years already, well it came through! Bic Carrol
got us a booking for the whole summer in the Town and country section of Houston Texas where all of the astronauts live and where I am so sure the film terms of endearment was set in, at any rate I digress, he got us a summer long booking at the red windmill dinner theater a very prestigious equity supper club so you could eat before the show started if you so desired, and as soon as the tickets arrived off we went and I had such a blast and I learned so much! I remember I only had to do three numbers, well technically, three numbers in the show and I won'teven reveal what they were paying me at the time which was top dollar. The show started out with a showgirl number that you would not believe and half of the cast were women, I mean real women with Va- JJ's, and we had boy backup dancers who were absolutely beyond awesome and could really really dance, if you were in a Big Carrol Show, if you were privileged and lucky and talented enough to work in ANY SHOW with the incredible beyond the Moon ultra Uber fabulous and so kind and generous whose heart is as big as Texas itself the legendary Bic Caroll YOU HAD TO BE A DAMN GREAT DANCER WHO KNEW HOW TO RESPECT AND SUBJUGATE THEMSELVES TO THE CHOREOGRAPHER EXTRAORDINAIRE, and if you were not the greatest dancer but knew how to move Very well and he saw "IT" in you, I will lay bottom Dollar that when you left that show you were not only a dancer but a better dancer than you had ever imagined you could be! He's absolutely unbelievable. So I would follow this big grand opening with real boys and real women and female illusionist showgirls more beautiful than the stars in the heavens with the opening, the technical opening number which was only like 12 minutes long and all talk I might add, to say it another way, I went on first as the late great Joan Rivers before Joan Rivers was Joan Rivers and that's another story all together, as I used to write comedy for Joanie as well... I am speaking of none other than the late great funny as hell comedian Totie Fields. Oh this is delicious I have to tell you, one night I was working at the Newport hotel and resort on lovely well they called it Golden Beach but it was Miami Beach where all the big fancy schmancy hotels are, and every few nights you would catch a glimpse of the comedian who could have been funnier if he did not think he was God's gift to comedy, Jackie Mason. So Jackie Mason is leaving the lounge and going up to his sweet at the Newport and I am leaving going up to the Sweet they had reserved for me at the Newport, but usually I would go home and drive for Miami to fort Lauderdale after the show because it gave me time and the Uber enjoyment of enjoying the company of one of my dearest and loved copartners in crime, in the business that means fellow headliner, Miss Florida 1981 Nikki Adams , but not this night apparently because I remember after I left the lounge I was going upstairs for some reason, I know they had this bodyguard there I wish I could remember his name I want to say Victor but this kid was absolutely gorgeous with these big blue eyes and he must have stood about seven and a half feet tall and every ounce was muscle and a few extra things if you know what I mean! Oh yes I had the hots for that boy let me tell you! I say boy well I'm 63 now so I can say boy, but he was indeed ALL man I can assure you of that one My SWEETIE Q'S! Actually, one night when Miss Nancy Yohe the first Lady and my first real teacher in the art we call theater as she was the last say first say and the house director and everything else at fort Lauderdale's children's theater which is actually a very very professional and prestigious place because such greatness has come out of it that I can actually be fortunate enough to add myself into the ones who graduated from there. At any rate another story for another time goes here and that night after the show I called her and invited her and as many guests as she wanted to bring to see the show at the Newport and I believe she called me back and asked me if it iswas okay to bring 11 guests with her and I said the more the merrier my dear and there will be 12 tickets on Friday night at the box office when you arrive for you and your guests and I will see you after the show so please don't leave. Am I telling the Nancy Yohe story again here? You see that night I had asked her that if we could mount AND get a $GOOD$FINANCIER WITH THE INTENTION NOT TO MENTION THE CASH, LOL, to mount a flawless production of Ira Levin's incredible and I suppose you could call it black comedy because on film it would be categorized as film noir, actually they did do it on film to perfection with Michael Caine and Diane Cannon and God bless his Sweet Soul Christopher Reeve and Irene Worth as next door neighbor and famous psychic, Helge Ten Dorp,
