THE TOUR
Tour a research museum that holds nearly 5 million insect specimens made up of 4 million pinned insects and around 800,000 aquatic insects in vials of alcohol. We have a few open displays of exotic and native insects in a showroom and 99% are housed in tall cabinets.
Students will be shown the wide diversity of insect fauna that occurs in the country. The collection started around 1874 and our earliest specimens are from around then. Active museums like ours captures a snapshot of insects that were here in the 1930s and all the changes that have occurred since then due to population growth and human expansion. The insects we have in our yards today are completely different than the ones 40-60 years ago because we have different plants in our yards now, more pavement, more homes.

🍄 This Wednesday: Bioluminescent & Fluorescent Fungi with Alan Rockefeller
Some mushrooms glow in the dark. Others appear to glow under ultraviolet light. Both are beautiful, and scientifically fascinating.
Join us virtually this Wednesday, April 1 at 6:30 PM for a presentation exploring the remarkable world of bioluminescent and fluorescent fungi with mycologist Alan Rockefeller.
Over the past two decades, Alan has documented thousands of fungal species and contributed to more than 400,000 fungal identifications on citizen science platforms like iNaturalist and Mushroom Observer. His research has focused heavily on fungal diversity in Mexico and Ecuador, and he regularly shares his work with audiences around the world.
In this visually rich presentation, Alan will share hundreds of high-quality photographs of glowing mushrooms and discuss:
• The difference between bioluminescent and fluorescent fungi
• How and why some mushrooms glow
• Photography techniques for capturing glowing fungi
• How UV light can help identify certain mushroom species
Whether you’re a mushroom enthusiast, photographer, or just curious about the hidden wonders of fungi, this talk offers a fascinating look into a rarely seen part of the natural world.
