Big Win for Colorado Students! ✏️📝
Last year, Colorado politicians eliminated paper-and-pencil CMAS testing thus forcing all Colorado schoolchildren to test on computer keyboards and screens.
Because Liberty students do not begin keyboarding instruction until later grades, this law change disproportionately and negatively impacted our 3rd- and 4th-grade students. The school initiated a lobbying effort to reverse the decision and can now celebrate a big success at the State Capitol in the last legislative session. The major legislative victory means all Colorado schools will, once again, be permitted to administer paper-pencil CMAS assessments to 3rd- and 4th-grade students.
LCS’s Director of Policy and Compliance Ms. Sarah Hunt played the lead role throughout the legislative process in securing this important outcome for our students and families.

Liberty Common School has been named one of America’s few Core Knowledge Leadership Schools by the Core Knowledge Foundation — a tremendous honor recognizing excellence in knowledge-rich education.
In its official announcement, the Foundation praised Liberty as “a shining example of what is possible when school leaders and educators commit to coherent, knowledge-rich learning experiences for students.”
This national recognition reflects more than 30 years of dedication to Liberty’s mission: a rigorous Core Knowledge curriculum, strong school leadership, exceptional teachers, and generations of hardworking students committed to academic excellence.
While Liberty receives many accolades each year, this distinction stands apart. It is a celebration for our students, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and staff — and a reminder of what our community can accomplish together.
We are grateful to the Core Knowledge Foundation for this recognition and proud to continue serving as a model for schools across the country.

🏫 At last week’s Board Meeting, 8th graders from Liberty Common Junior High School shared reflections on their first year in the new standalone junior-high building. Students shared the positives of building their own school identity and the more intentional planning of the Order System, while also expressing interest in more cross-campus leadership opportunities with the high school. Several students noted how having high school students nearby previously helped elevate expectations and behavior.
🎶 The music department also celebrated an incredible year including program growth, student success, and a shared commitment to finding solutions to fund a future performing arts center. If you are interested in supporting these efforts or discussing opportunities to help, please contact Director of Advancement Brett Harkey at [email protected].
👏 The Board voted to retain Headmaster Schaffer for the 2026–2027 school year, and the school is deeply grateful for his continued leadership and dedication to students and community.
📣 Finally, the Board announced a vacancy following the departure of Dr. Peter Conrad as his daughter recently graduated. Applications for the open Board seat will be accepted through Friday, June 12th at 5:00PM. We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Conrad for his time, leadership, and service to the school community.
