This simple test can reveal a lot about your baby’s feeding experience.

In feeding therapy, we often check the flow rate of bottles to ensure it’s just right—not too fast, not too slow. 🌟 Consistent flow supports a positive feeding experience from the beginning and decreases overwhelm, stress and frustration.

Not all ni***es labeled “slow flow” actually have a consistent slow flow. I know- it’s quite confusing.

👶🏽 Why does this matter for your baby’s feeding?

Proper flow prevents stress and fatigue during feeds

Supports development of efficient sucking and swallowing

Proper flow rate supports neuroprotection and Improves the quality of the feeding

“Feedings should be safe, functional, nurturing and developmentally/individually supportive.” (Ludwig SM, Waitzman KA. Changing feeding documentation to reflect infant-driven feeding practices, Newborn and Infant Nursing Reviews. 2007;7(3):155-160.)

Every detail counts when it comes to feeding. If your baby is a “messy” bottle feeder, gulps and coughs during bottle feeding, give me a call. We can work together to find the right fit for your family.

Check out my video below for more on how the test works. And remember—small changes can make a big difference. 💙

NICU life can feel like you're living on a never-ending loop: monitors beeping, feedings timed to the second, and the same stretch of hallway on repeat. It’s easy to feel like the days blur together.

But even in the routine, progress hides. Your baby’s body is strengthening, little by little, with every moment of care and connection. Those seemingly endless days are setting the stage for something incredible: home.

Hang in there, parents. You’re rewriting this "Groundhog Day" story into one of resilience and love. 💛

Being a NICU parent is full of challenges, but one of the most powerful things you can do is advocate for your baby’s feeding journey. I had the chance to chat on Our Forever Smiles Podcast with host Laura Arroyo about what happens after birth, NICU stays, and how to navigate those early days with confidence.

This clip touches on the importance of speaking up for your feeding goals, even when it’s tough. Sending love to anyone walking this path—you’re not alone.

On National Hugging Day, let’s talk about a unique and heartwarming way to connect with your NICU baby—the hand hug.

Sometimes called a containment hold, hand swaddling, or facilitated tuck (for our therapy friends), this gentle, comforting touch carries so many incredible benefits:

💖 Reduces pain and stress
💖 Improves sleep quality
💖 Promotes bonding
💖 Helps regulate your baby’s heart rate and breathing

Hand hugs are a simple gesture with a big impact, offering your little one the comfort and reassurance they need. Ask your NICU team or neonatal therapist how to give a proper hand hug and bring a little extra warmth to your baby’s journey.

It’s the kind of hug that speaks volumes without words. 🌟

A heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Brooke for her kind words and for recognizing the impact of support during such a delicate time in families’ lives. 🌟

As someone who’s worked in a hospital and witnessed firsthand the challenges families face in the NICU, her words highlight how vital it is to have compassionate care tailored to these moments.

It’s an honor to know that the work I do—helping families navigate feeding, bonding, and nurturing their baby’s development—is making a difference. Support during this tender period isn’t just helpful; it can truly be transformative.

To Brooke Hatfield Miller thank you for shining a light on the importance of these services and for sharing your unique perspective. 💛
