The Journey To 90 - Stronger Than Yesterday

The Journey To 90 - Stronger Than Yesterday Stronger Than Yesterday.

In July, I planted my flag in the ground and declared,
“This is where yesterday ends and right now begins.”

The Journey To 90 was born — a commitment to intentional living, obedience, discipline, humility, and truth.

Today Chad and I met in Waco for a Waco Ironman Recon Ride. He will be riding this route in October in the Waco Ironman. About half of it is included in the Wild West 100 that I will be riding in a couple of weeks.

I cannot really put into words how great it is to ride with my son. I wish it could be more often. My goodness he can fly! It is a joy for me to ride along and flash back to my little boy riding with me on his training wheel bike - then a regular bike, and later riding trails with me on a mountain bike.

We finished up this morning before the asphalt melted. I am looking forward to riding in cooler weather eventually - but who in Texas isn’t ready for a real cold front to drop in?

Recon done. The more you know…the better you go. There will be a reward in these events for the time put in today. But today, for Chad and me, the greatest is banking more miles and memories!

Two months and 3 events left before I get the right TKR. Then I will start all over looking to get that first mile in.

The Journey Continues…

People often ask me “where do I start?”

I write about how are bodies are under attack from an unseen enemy. The news is beginning to cover more and more about this.

Take a look at these two images. The Castle is your body. You can build a filter wall outside to prevent toxins, pfa’s, endocrine disrupters, etc from getting in - or - you can “fight them” from them inside The Castle.

I believe the first step is to reduce the invasion. Stop the overwhelming of your body’s defenses - immune system, liver, kidneys and all. Build the filter fence - stay disciplined and determined - free your future. Give your body the best chance TO WIN each day.

This is living Stronger Than Yesterday!

TDF 59 — B***y Kicker Deluxe 🚴‍♂️🔥

When I designed this route, I knew it would want to flex its hilly biceps and win the day. I studied it, knew where the climbing challenges were, the rollers, and descents. I started out with one thought in mind - Patience is Strength.

There were plenty of opportunities to blast off and let the horses run. I felt them. Oh yes I wanted them. But I let them pass...because I knew somewhere in those last 15 miles there was going to be a toll booth. I needed to keep some change in my pocket to pay the toll.

Turns out the toll collector was the Texas heat. ☀️
By the final hour, all I wanted was a shade tree and a breeze! 🌳

59 miles. 2,651 feet of climbing. Nearly four hours moving.

I did not burn matches just to watch them burn. I paced, controlled the route, then finished sweaty and
hot but in fine form.

Sometimes strength isn’t how hard you can go.
Sometimes strength is knowing when not to.

PATIENCE IS STRENGTH

There comes a point when strength no longer needs to announce itself.

You’ve been there.
You’ve done that.
You’ve fought enough battles to know that not every challenge requires an immediate response.

Sometimes the strongest move is to wait. Watch. Listen.

Let the situation reveal itself.

Experience teaches that being first to move isn’t nearly as important as knowing “when” to move.

What is your next move?

Take your time. I promise you, the seasoned warrior already has it covered. He was three steps ahead before the game even started. Not because he moves faster. Because he has learned to see farther.

Become the Warrior. Lengthen your vision. Be prepared. Timing is everything. And Patience is Strength!

This morning I had not recovered fully from the ride yesterday. This time of year the heat drains a little power out of a person. So the plan had to change. Instead of the 7:00 am TDF 61 Mix, I had to switch to another route. I did my thing to get ready: fuel up - fire up. Then I created a route that I named TDF 30 The Loop of Joy and launched near 11:00 am.

I did not ride to push myself to a new record pace, cadence or mph. No training session involved. Today was about “just enjoying”.

Sure I wanted to feel the wind on my skin and the sun on my face. I love movement. But what I really wanted was to slow down and be present in the beautiful country I rode through. To take it all in and soak up the beauty. To experience gratitude in these moments. I took more pictures and videos than any ride to date.

Once I got home, I knew that my plan had succeeded. I felt immersed in joy!

The 61 Mix with about 3K of climbing will still be there next weekend. I will be there too…

After a week of work and evenings using the Kickr & Zwift, I really wanted to get on the road this morning …just to feel the wind on my face, the sway of my bike and hear the rumble of the tires on pavement. Movement. I needed movement. The Rhythm Loop did not disappoint. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

Wishing you an outstanding weekend my friends!

Helping My Brain Find My Leg Again

This daily health habit is one of the most amazing and helpful ones that I have experienced. It only takes only a few minutes. Since my knee replacement, I regularly run my fingertips lightly over the skin of my leg—especially areas where sensation has been altered. I call it “Helping My Brain Find My Leg Again”.

Why? I am giving my brain information. Our brains maintain an internal sensory “map” of our bodies. Surgery, swelling, nerve irritation, pain and periods of altered movement can change the signals traveling between an area of the body and the brain.

So I give it signals. Light touch. Different directions. Different areas. Sometimes barely brushing the skin. And I pay attention.

I’m not trying to force anything to happen. I am simply providing my nervous system with repeated sensory input and allowing neuroplasticity to do what it does. Sort of like telling my brain “here is my leg…let me show you all the parts of it”.

Touch → Signal → Brain → Map

Recovery isn’t only rebuilding muscle and restoring movement. The nervous system is learning too. When I started doing this it got calmer. Nerves came back on line. Muscles started firing. My brain began trusting the process. I do this every day.

If you have surgery, especially a TKR, or an injury give this a try and train your brain!

We all develop habits. It is just human nature. What we need are healthy habits. That will take some intentional and persistent action.

I have been sharing some of my daily health habits on anther page where members are encouraged to do so. It has been great to see what everyone is doing. “So why not share them on my page” I thought to myself…and here is the first one.

My health habit of the day is what I call The Rhythm of Consistency. Our bodies were designed to live by rhythm. Wake. Move. Eat. Work. Rest. Sleep. Repeat.

Real Biological Rhythms (Chronobiology) is innate to all living things on our planet - which include you and me.

Circadian rhythms: About 24 hours long (manages sleep and waking).
Ultradian rhythms: Shorter than 24 hours (manages smaller body functions).
Infradian rhythms: Longer than 24 hours, like monthly cycles.

For most of human history we rose with the sun, slowed as darkness fell, and gave our bodies the consistency they were designed to expect. Today many of us do the opposite. We stay up late under bright lights. We eat at random times. We live in noise, chaos, and constant stimulation. We push through stress without enough recovery…then wonder why we feel tired, foggy, and run down.

One of the greatest gifts I learned to give my body isn’t something you buy. It is consistency.

Go to bed around the same time.
Wake up around the same time.
Move my body daily.
Respect recovery as much as effort.

Our biology thrives on rhythm. When we begin working with it instead of constantly against it, amazing things can happen.

That’s my plan and I am sticking to it.

Better rhythm. Better recovery. Better life.
Better inputs. Better outputs.

Another weekend…another cycling event. This time I was in Copperas Cove riding in the Cove House Classic. A beautiful 60 mile ride through a variety of Texas landscapes. One stretch reminded me of where I lived as a young boy.

Lots of climbing! I focused on cadence & tempo tied to my breathing. I like to stay very relaxed in my upper body and let the legs do the work. Breathing with rhythm really helps this.

If you have had or will experience a TKR, activity feedback always follows later in the day - but even more particularly the next morning. This is information I use to learn what is too much and what is not enough. Neither will move healing forward. In fact too much is a risk for injury or set back. The goal is enough stress for growth to occur followed by proper recovery.

After the ride my knee was quite happy. This morning it is “elated”. It is indeed getting Stronger Than Yesterday!

Enjoy your day everyone…share a smile and some love with those around you. Joy will be your companion.
